Football/Soccer Session (Academy Sessions): 4v4+4 - possession and transfer

4v4+4 (20 mins)

Practice Objective:

• Practice aimed at working both BP and BPO, where all four key skill components can be utilised, but striking the ball and first touch coming to the fore.

• 4v4+4 - teams must work the ball to the other side of the pitch to score in the goal facing the opposite way. Defenders to defend the transfer of the ball and ultimately the goal
• If uneven numbers, joker plays for team in possession.
• Game should be fast paced, with lots of turn overs.

Set Up

• Mark out area 30mx 20m

• 2 goals on the halfway mark, back to back
• 1 bag of balls - split between each end
• 3 sets bibs
• cones to mark out area

Practice Explanation:

• 4v4+4 - adjust numbers to suit 

• Red team starts by playing the ball in and they work with blues to move the ball to the other side to score
• Yellow team start defending.
• As soon as goal is scored, other team re-starts from that end, aiming to work to the other side.
• If team in BPO wins it back before the ball is transferred they can score in the goal for a point.
• 20 minutes - 5x3min/30secR/2.5min Changeover.

Coaching Points

• Movement off the ball, creating passing angles and through ball lanes.
• Do they need to pass - can they drive into space to transfer the ball?
• What kind of pass - can we play a more direct, longer pass?
• BPO - can they win the ball back in the opposite zone and score without progression. Defend the space in numbers.
