Pitch Set up

3 way rotation (10 mins) followed by 10 mins game play.

  • Tackle boxes
  • Tackle/dribble game
  • Numbers game
Rotation order:
  • U6 (Ed+ young leaders) -  Numbers game, 1 v1 tackle boxes, dribble/tackle game
  • U7 (Olly, Jonathan + young leaders) - 1v1 tackle boxes, dribble/tackle game, numbers game
  • U8 (Simon + young leaders) - dribble/tackle game, numbers game, 1v1 tackle boxes
I will deliver tackling boxes with your support and then float between match play. You will lead numbers games and dribble/tackle game.

For game play. Looking at max 5v5. Ideally smaller, around 3v3, so multiple games if larger numbers.

Numbers game

Players are lined up in a q behind their cone. Coach calls out two numbers. The first number refers to one team and the second number refers to the other e.g. 2/1. This would make it a 2v1. Players have to dribble through the corner goals to score a goal (or in mini goals). Once players have completed their go, they join the back of the line.

Key coaching points:

Attack:

  • Move at angles and not straight at the defender.
  • Change direction and speed (after skill, focus on left to right which we have covered)
  • Attack down the weak side where possible (+ make space by taking left before going right)
Defence:
  • Close down attacker
  • Stick length and step away
  • show (channel) attacker down your strong side
  • Low and side on body position
  • Use jab tackle to get opponents eyes down or when their stick comes off the ball (snake tackle)
  • Use block tackle when opponent make mistakes or get to close (road block)

1v1 tackle boxes and tackling technique

Player 1 passes to player 2. Player 2 then has to try and dribble the ball over the end zone line. Player 1 has to try and tackle and then dribble past the opposite end zone. If a player scores, they then pass the ball to their opponent.

Try and match players up on ability.

Encourage good defending and attacking skills when players are in 1v1 situations.

In general play, encourage players using space and passing the ball.

  • Change direction and speed (after skill)
  • Attack down the weak side where possible (+ make space by taking left before going right)

Dribble/tackle game

In a space, half the players have balls and half don't.

  • Objective for those with balls is to try and keep possession of their ball by eliminating defenders and moving into space.
  • Objective for players without the ball is tackle and win the ball.
  • Once a player has been tackled, they have to hunt down another player to tackle.
  • Once a tackler has won the ball, they have to carry to space and avoid being tackled.

Progression could be to have half in bibs in one team and the other in a diffrent colour/team. Team in possession with the most balls at the end wins.
