Description

Technical/Tactical Aim - To influence players to retain possession of the ball by positioning themselves in areas with space, and to execute the key pass into the CM at the correct time.

Objective 1 - Engage with the players to make sure they're constantly moving finding space to receive the ball with minimal pressure.

Objective 2 - The ball has to be moving at pace to make it difficult for the opposition to intercept. Reinforce the correct weight of pass from a variety of distances. Pace on the passes will allow the half turn to be more effective and recycle the ball sooner.

Objective 3 - Just because the objective is to get the ball to the CM in the zone doesn't suggest every pass should be directed for that player. Patience and timing is important. Get the players to move the ball which will create gaps of space and play the pass at the correct timing.

Warm up (5 mins)

Organizational / Instructions - After a couple minutes of jogging and dynamic stretches there will be 2 rondos, a number will be called from each group and that person then has to run to the other group with intention of winning the ball, if the group can make 10 passes they can now go and score in to the mini goals and the defender can still try to prevent the goal. If the individual wins the ball before the 10 pass count they can also go and score with one person from that group being able to defend the attack.

high knees, lungees, heel flicks, open the gates, close the gates, sprint bursts, high jumps, high kicks.

Coaching Points - minimise unnecessary touches, head up, correct weight of pass, communicating, light footed ready to receive and anticipate passes.

Lift one knee up to your core area bending your leg at a 90 degree angle, maintain that bend in the leg and take your bent leg away from the body making sure it remains raised then place it back down on the ground and repeat with the opposite leg.

Progressions / Adaptations - 1 touch

Technical Practice (5 mins)

Organizational / Instructions - 2 groups will take turns at playing a pass through to the centre midfielder who will attempt to receive the ball on the half turn and pass in to the mini goals. The passer becomes the playmaker, the playmaker becomes the defender and the defender collects the ball and goes to the end of the group.

Coaching Points - correct weight of pass (with a bit of pace), light footed ready to receive the ball, adjusting body position before the ball has arrived to the feet, scanning before receiving, if the pass has no pace then take a touch away from pressure and play a bounce pass with team mate, bent knees. head up.

Perform half turn when its available, use body to shield the ball if there's added pressure and play the bounce pass. Weight of pass determines playmakers decision i.e. with pace the half turn is on and without pace take a touch out of the feet and use body to shield the ball if the defender is applying pressure.

Progressions / Adaptations - combine the play of both groups to provide width, move the goals in the middle so a cross can be performed with a tap in finish, (Image to progression on right of technical practice)

Progression (10 mins)

Organizational / Instructions - Now when the playmaker/receiver receives the ball on the half turn they are playing a switch pass to the opposite group on the flank to then make a run into the defence zone for a tap in finish. The same rotations apply to the progression as they did in the 1st stage of the technical practice.

Coaching Points -  correct weight of pass (with a bit of pace), light footed ready to receive the ball, adjusting body position before the ball has arrived to the feet, scanning before receiving, if the pass has no pace then take a touch away from pressure and play the switch from there, communication, timing of run, head up and aware of surroundings as two groups could potentially collide.

Game Related (10 mins)

Organizational / Instructions - Both teams are trying to keep possession of the ball while finding the key pass which is a pass through the 4 cones in the middle of the area. Both teams need to retain possession and be patient until the opportunity arises. Once a pass count of 10 is reached they can attempt to score into either mini goal. Furthermore if the team in possession are able to play a pass to a player receiving in the middle zone with a half turn then they can also attempt to score without building up the pass count of 10.

Coaching Points - Create passing angles for support, minimise unnecessary touches of the ball, key passes need to be executed sharply with pace and precision, communication, maximum effort to get in to good positions with available space to play.

Progressions / Adaptations - A floater can be used for the team in possession to provide higher chance of success and tempo.

Organizational / Instructions - Light jogging gradually fading into a walk followed by a series of static stretches most of which are directed for the leg muscles.

Coaching Points - Perform stretches as demonstrated, there should be a tight feeling on the muscle being stretched, hold the stretch for 8-10 seconds, perform stretches at a steady pace. breathing in through the nose and out of the mouth to decrease heart rate.

Place your left foot on the outside of your right foot and arch your back and stretch as far down as possible attempting to touch your toes, hold this position for 8 seconds then slightly increase the stretch so you feel added tension and hold this for another 8 seconds then slowly come back up to your normal standing position and do this with the opposite leg.
