20 mins
Setup:
2 groups of 5 (or 6 or 7)
1 bib for defener to hold
1 ball per group (extras nearby)
Activity:
Team in possession tries to keep ball away from defender.
If defender wins ball, the player that made the mistake becomes defender. Old defender should drop bib and play should be restarted quickly.
Progressions and questions to ask:
+ Follow pass - When would this happen in game?
+ Move opposite of pass - Why move away from ball in a game?
+ Do pushup after a pass - How can other players help?
+ Add a 2nd ball into game that players pass by hand. If ball is in player's hand they can't be passed to -- When should you decided who can be passed to?
+ After 3 passes, group can move to a new grid - Why would we move as a group?

20 mins
Setup:
Groups of 3
2 balls per group
Field setup as shown (create as many as needed). Size according to players ability/size.
Activity:
1 player acts as defender.
Other 2 players take turns trying to dribble passed defender.
Defender is not allowed to leave the line.
If defender steals ball, the attacker becomes the defender.
Guided Discovery Questions:
+ Which part of the foot should be used to dribble straight ahead? Big touches or little? Why?
+ What are some moves you could try?
+ How do you get the defender to go the wrong way?
+ How could you change the game to make it easier? Harder?
Progression:
+ 2v1 (defender plays for 2 minutes)
Questions:
+ What are some types of runs you could make off the ball?
+ How can attacker with ball tell other attacker where to run?
+ How could you use fakes or disguise to fool the defender?

20 mins
Play a variety of 4v4 games:
- Score by passing to teammate across line (penetration)
- Score by dribbling across line (dribbling)
Ways to affect decisions:
- All players must touch ball before scoring
- If you score, keep the ball and score the other direction
- An overlap must occur before scoring

What is Guided Discovery?
+ Using games and questions to guide the player towards learning without giving specific instructions
+ Should be combined with direct/command coaching to transfer ideas (30% direct, 70% guided discovery)
How?
+ Setup games to force specific tactics/techniques
+ Ask meaningful questions
+ Combination of Low Order (simple) and High Order questions (complex)
Low Order question examples:
- "What part of the foot is used for short passes?"
- "What is a good shape for a team of 4 players?"
High Order question examples:
- "What are you looking for when you look up for teammates?"
- "How can we get the ball down the field quickly?"
Pitfalls:
1. Players answer without real thought, they just call out catchwords or phrases they have heard from the coach
2. Coach’s overuse of questions and/or mistimed or misphrased questions
3. Coach’s use of rhetorical questions
4. The coach not giving the players enough time to process the question, think it
through and then give an answer (impatience)
5. The coach asking too many questions sequentially
Strenghts:
1. "Player centered"
2. Helps players in problem solving aspects of game
3. Allows the game to be the teacher
4. Gives high repeitions of decision making
5. Teaches players to make decisions based on cues from the game
