Session Organisation

The aim of this session is to work on the Welsh wayprinciple of creating overloads the primary focus will be recognising the righttime to create 4vs3s in central areas. Aiming to exploit gaps between thedefensive lines and find passes into the spare man.

The ball will start from the Reds centre mid, thowins or goalkicks if the ball goesout of play. The red team will aim to make multiple movements to lose theirdefenders and create space to exploit players dragged out of position.

Conditions, Challenges & Targets

Reds are looking to score into the large goal. Goals scoredthat include a central overload in the buildup will count as 2 goals.

The blues will aim to score by playing the ball into themini goals representing their centre forward and striker. The goal will onlycount as double if all outfield defensive players are over the mid-point of thehalf (reference point between the D and centre circle) marked by the redcones.

 Blocks

Block 1 & 2: Finding the spare man

  • Making up to 3 movements to lose your marker
  • Aiming to create gaps centrally by stretching the field

Block 3 & 4: Central overloads and increasing height

  • Utilising the height of the team
  • Increasing player numbers centrally by looking for overload opportunities

Blocks 5 & 6: Check Understanding

  • Find and exploit gaps between and behind lines
  • Quick movements to drag players out of position

Key points:

In-Possession (Coached)

Technical Points

  • Looking to make firm passes, inside of the foot, centre of the ball, body and standing foot aligned to target
  • Soft delivery into space allowing attacker to step onto the ball
  • First, second and third movements to try and pull the defence out of position

Additional Points

  • Recognise opportunities to overload centrally
  • Recognise 2vs1 opportunities
  • Understand when we can exploit gaps between the lines
  • Quick forward to play to progress the ball
  • Prioritise central and direct attacks with the ball into the CF and striker

Out of Possession (Not Coached)

Technical Points

  • Knowledge of pressing triggers and when to use them
  • Force direction of play - use of body shape to dictate and lock player into specific zone
  • Scanning for player movement
  • Touch tight when pressing using our body to delay the player on the ball

Additional Points

  • Awareness of when to step out
  • Recognise when defensive support is needed
  • Recognise when we are best to stay compact
  • Defensive shifting to close gaps left by the pressing player
  • Reading player movements
