Traditional session...
Duration of the session: 1 hour 30 Minutes
Age Range: Under 16's (Male)
Ability: Community Players
Amount of players: 10
Venue: Local Pitch (Varied on available venue)
Activity 1: Possession in the box (5 minutes)
The set up for pitch 1 and 2 are the same but the pitches are separate. They consist of a square (15 metres x 15 metres) of four cones and 5 players (Only using the blue square for now). The 4 outside players (Red Bibs) have to try and keep possession of the ball without the defender (Blue Bib) getting the ball. The players that don't have the ball must be moving to try and create space for them to receive and release the ball. The outside players must make 5 passes to then win a point. If the defender intercepts the ball then they receive a point.
Conditions:
-The outside players are fixed to their side of the square.
-The outside players can not enter the box to receive the ball and the inside player can not go outside the box.
-The football must be played through the box to allow an opportunity for the defender to try and intercept the ball.
Challenges:
-Can the outside players be creative with their movement?
-Can the outside players make 5 interrupted passes to create a point?
-Can the defender not allow the attacking team to score more than 5 points?
Targets:
1) To try and make 5 successful passes to score a point
Coaching points:
Weight of pass
Decision Making/Reaction time
Movement off the ball (Up and down the touchline)
Equipment for one pitch (2x everything)
-8 Footballs (1 in play, 7 in the ball nest)
-4 red bibs (Attackers)/-1 blue bib (Defender)/-4 red cones (Blue Box)/-4 red cones (Green Box)
Interventions:
Fly by/drive by's
Group discussions (Tactics board)
Coaching toolbox:
Use of the tactics board (read/write leaners)
Drive by/fly bys (Auditory/visual learners)
Group discussions (auditory learners)
Demonstrations (Kinesthetic/visual learners)
Coaching style:
Autocratic- So I can get across to the players what I want from them and to get key points across.
Guided discovery- For the remaining time of this section, it will be guided discovery to see the ability of the players (Return to autocratic if the players are struggling)

Technical Weight of pass and first touch is vital to success. |
|
Tactical When and where to play the pass and when to make the correct run (Transition). Players maximising the width of the pitch to create space |
|
Physical Movement on/ off the ball to create space and agility to transition quickly |
|
Psychological Making the correct decisions (Correct pass/ timing of the run) |
|
Social Communcation to other players |
Activity 1 Developed: Possession in the box (Movement) (10 Minutes)
The players must transition from the blue box to the green box when the defender has won possession. The attacker that lost possession becomes the defender and the defender takes the attackers position. This is the same set up as activity 1 but every time the defender wins the ball the attackers must swap to the other box, creating space and constantly moving on and off the ball.
Conditions:
-The defender can come out of the box if they want to (More pressure).
-The attackers can swap sides with another attacker to create space.
Challenges:
-Can the defender win the ball back before the attackers score 2 points?
-Can the attackers change sides at least once to create another option for their teammates?
-Can players increase the tempo of the passes while keeping the ball on the floor?
Targets:
1) The attacking team win a point if they make 5 successful passes without the defender intercepting the ball
2) The defender can win 2 points if they manage to intercept the ball or force an error on the attacking side.
Coaching points:
Movement off the ball (To make space)
Decision making/Reaction time
Weight of pass
Further Development:
-An extra defender can be introduced so it becomes a 3 vs 2 but the attacking players can move to each side of the box freely.
-Increase/ Decrease the size of the box depending on the success of the session.
Equipment:
-Same as activity 1
Interventions:
Fly by/drive by's
Group discussions (Tactics board)
Coaching toolbox:
Use of the tactics board (read/write leaners)
Drive by/fly bys (Auditory/visual learners)
Group discussions (auditory learners)
Demonstrations (Kinesthetic/visual learners)
Coaching style:
Autocratic- Start this section with autocratic so the players know what i want from them.
Guided discovery- This allows the players the freedom to try and reach the goals set with some help for me

Technical Body shape (receiving on the back foot) weight of pass and pass accuracy |
|
Tactical When to switch the ball and when to use the player overload to dominate the possession. Players maximising the width of the pitch to create space |
|
Physical Movement on/off the ball to creat space( change of direction/speed) |
|
Psychological Decision making to create better opportunitys and confidence to try new things |
|
Social Effective communcation and player ownership |
Activity 2: Possession in multiple boxes (15 minutes)
The set up consists of a 40 x 40-yard box with 4 equal boxes inside it with a goal for each box. This is 4vs 4 with two floating players (Green bib) that create an overload for the team with possession. The team with the ball need to make 10 passes before they can have a shot at the goal.
Conditions:
-The players are fixed to their boxes (excluding the floating players)
-The attacking team have to make 10 successful passes in a row to be able to shot and score a point.
Challenges:
-Can every player on the team have a touch of the ball before trying to score a point?
-Can the attacking team try and create space with movement off the ball?
-Can they try and score a goal using 2 touches (per player)?
Targets:
1) To try and score as many goals as possible
2) Can the defending team create as much pressure against the 6vs 4
Coaching Points:
Movement on/off the ball/Maximising the width of the pitch (To make space)
Decision making/Reaction time
Weight of pass
Communication
Further Development:
-If the attacking team are finding it too easy then the floating players will be assigned a team to create a fair 5vs 5 (No Overload)
-Start to add time limit (Players only have 3 seconds to receive and pass the ball)
-Remove/ add more goals to create more areas that can be penetrated
Equipment:
28 red cones/4 red flat markers
4 goals
4 red bibs /4 blue bibs /2 green bibs (Floating players)
15 footballs
Interventions:
Fly by/drive by's
Group discussions (Tactics board)
Coaching toolbox:
Use of the tactics board (read/write leaners)
Drive by/fly bys (Auditory/visual learners)
Group discussions (auditory learners)
Demonstrations (Kinesthetic/visual learners)
Coaching style:
Guided discovery- This allows complete freedom to the players to see if they use the skills learned earlier
Democratic: This gives the players the freedom so I can see if they are progressing in terms of their understanding
Autocratic- Only if the players are not doing what I want (Movement on/off the ball)
Q+A- The players and the coach can ask questions about how they can improve for the next section (use interventions)

Activity 3: Small sided game (30 minutes)
The set up consists of 40 x 40 box with 4 smaller boxes in the corner (10x 10). There are two teams (4 red and 4 blue) with two floating players that will join the team with possession. The attacking team must pass the ball to one of the floating players in one of the four boxes before they are allowed to have a shot at the goal.
Conditions:
The attacking team must make at least one pass to a floating player inside one of the boxes before they are allowed to score
The attacking team must make 5 passes before they are allowed to shoot
The players can only shoot while inside the 5-yard box
Only one defender can go in the box to challenge a floating player
Challenges:
Can the attacking team score a goal within 10 seconds?
Can the attacking team try and use two of the boxes before scoring?
Target:
1) For the attacking team to try and score as many goals using the space available
2) For the defending team to try and minimise the number of goals they receive
Coaching Points:
Movement on/off the ball/Maximising the width of the pitch (To make space)
Decision making/Reaction time
Weight of pass
Communication
To retain and build possession
Further development:
The defending team can have two players that can pressure the floating player in the box
Only allow 3 touches and if they find this too easy then add a time limit (3 seconds and release the ball)
Make the inside boxes smaller/ bigger depending on the session.
Equipment:
2 goals/ 15 footballs
