1v1
Blues start with the ball and pass it to red.
Red attempts to dribble past blue into the red end zone.
If Blue wins the ball, shoot at the small goal.
Blues and Reds swap roles after every play.
Coaching Points:
- Body Shape - Not square on
- Weight - Don't be caught flat footed
- Head - Watch the ball - not the player
Although the main learning outcome of the lesson is cover it is important for the players to know about body shape and how to take their body shape from the initial pressing/delaying player. Re-iterate that the reason we are doing this is to get sued to that body shape and that this will aid the lesson later on.

The practice then develops into a 2 v 2 scenario.
Defender 1 - Delays the attack
Defender 2 - Provides Cover - Mirroring the body shape of Def 1.
It's important for the covering player that they are close enough to the 1st Def to support but also close enough to the other attacker to get across if the ball is passed.

Defender 1 - Delays the attack
Defender 2 - Provides Cover - Mirroring the body shape of Def 1.
Defender 3 - 4 - Provide further Cover (Diagonal Lines)
It's important for the covering player that they are close enough to the 1st Def to support but also close enough to the other attacker to get across if the ball is passed.

8 v 8 SSG
Long narrow pitch to force the players to concentrate on cover and balance without thinking of wide areas.
GK - restricted to "D" as this allows for more room behind the defence.
Formation - 1-3-2-2
3 Defenders v 2 Attackers should allow 1 x def to press/delay and 2 x def to cover.
Coaching Observations to Note:
- How does the 1st def press/delay
- Do the other def give cover?
- Does the defensive line get caught flat?
