Dribbling Drill

Session can be set up in separate areas if space allows

Assistants may need to mirror sessions in different area's so coach to make sure they are prepared

Make use of outside space to allow session to progress quicker if possible

As its week 1 bring all the players in to introduce yourself & assistants. Let them know that they will be focusing on dribbling, getting as many touches as possible during the session & practicing skills/turns and using both feet whilst dribbling

Session setup -

To start make a large area big enough for all players to dribble around in

Players have a ball each

*6 squared area's will be added to the area after the initial warm up

Session Aim

To get players comfortable dribbling the ball & to get them changing direction, using both feet whilst trying to not to clash into other players keeping the ball under control.

Session walkthrough

Players to start dribbling around the area

Coach to build up the session

Ask players can they use different parts of the foot

Can the players use both feet

Challenge players to get as many touches in 60 seconds as possible without the ball coming to a stop

Ask players what skills/turns they know, if players are comfortable then show the rest of the group

Coach to demonstrate any skills/turns that have been shown & to add new ones to give players ideas.

Progressions

Add the 6 squared area's as seen in the diagram & number them 1-6 - squares need to be big enough to fit all players in, space will be tight but that's the aim for players to keep control in tight areas

Coach to introduce a different command in each area - once players have done the command they dribble back into the large area

*Give the commands out one at a time e.g. Introduce number 1, let the players do it then introduce number 2 etc

Box 1 - 6 toe taps

Box 2 - 6 side to side's

Box 3 - Perform any turn

Box 4 - Perform any skill

Box 5 - Switch balls with another player

Box 6 - Perform 2 kick ups *balls can be picked up by players if necessary but encourage flicking the ball up themselves

Progressions

Players are given different orders to perform the commands e.g. Box 4,6,2,3,1 then 5 - coach can mix up the order to keep players on their toes

*Each box can be named after a different football player/team so that players have to listen & react

Competition

Player have to enter each of the 6 boxes, they can go in any order.

Coaching Points to be delivered over several stoppages throughout the drill include

Close control

Scanning space

Awareness of other players dribbling close to you (especially when in comes to the competition as there will now be lots of traffic with players going in every direction)

Use of both feet

Different parts of the foot to dribble with

Acceleration after performing skill/turn

Communication (Especially in box 5 when they need to switch balls)

T-Cone Relay

Session setup

Arrange 4 cones in a t-shape

Split players into teams of 2/3/4 depending on numbers

*The diagram is a zoomed in version of one group, several of the T's should be set up in the area

One ball between each group

Session Aim

For players to dribble at different speeds keeping the ball under control. Realising when to use smaller & bigger touches & also knowing which part of the foot to use depending on which cone they are approaching. Also adding in a competition element means players have to do all this under pressure too.

Session walkthrough

Players are going to first practice the drill then coach will turn it into a competition

One at a time players will dribble the ball round all the cones - the sequence to start - Dribble to cone 1,2,3,4,2,1

Players to dribble back to teammate, give them a high 5 & the next player will do the same

Coaching points to be delivered over numerous different stoppages

Which part of the foot to dribble with

When to take a bigger touch coming from around the cones

Slowing the dribble down when approaching a cone to change direction

Low centre of gravity & keeping close to the cones

Teamwork

Communication

Progressions Include

Players to dribble in the opposite direction of the 'T' - Sequence = Cones 1,2,4,3,2,1 - Players will have to use different parts of the foot to get around cones

Players must perform a skill at certain cones before moving on

Players can only use their weaker foot to dribble

Competition

Have a competition between all teams after they are used to the sequences & have had some practice

Add rewards, prizes etc to help keep players motivated & having fun.

Players will be ready to go into matches at this point, have several pitches set up if its possible so their are no teams sat out waiting to play. Rotate teams so everybody gets to play each team.

Keep dribbling theme going by awarding extra goals as incentives for good dribbling in the games.
