SSG / In Possession / Create & Exploit Overloads
15 Minutes Maximum
Welsh Way Principles:
Understand how to use the midfield unit to create & exploit overloads in central areas
Organisation / Area Size:
65x75 yards
Goals at each end
Practice is 9 +GK vs 7 +GK
Red team play GK-4-2-3-1 minus #9 in a GK-4-2-3
Blue team play GK-4-4-2 minus both fullbacks in a GK-1-4-2
How:
Continuing to coach the Red team, the have to develop their understanding of how to use their movement and combination play to create & exploit overloads in central areas without the visual cue of the coned area.
Minimum 5 minutes - player movement to create the overload
Minimum 5 minutes - interchange positions to find the spare player
Additional time - reacting to problems caused by the opposition (Blue CB stepping into midfield to negate overload)
Explanation:
Play starts/restarts with game realism (goal kicks/throw-ins/corners). Building on the prior specific practice, the Reds are continued to be coached on how to build up play from the back through combinations and movement of the central midfield 3. With the addition of the Blue GK, the Red midfield 3 may now have to deal with the problem of the Blue CB stepping into midfield to continue their high press. If this happens, the Reds have to be coached on how their movement can create a spare player.
Whilst not being coached, the Blues are instructed to continue to press high up the pitch.
Both teams score in their respective goals.
Challenges, Conditions & Targets:
The Blues are challenged to press high and try to force a mistake. If they haven't already done so, in the last 5 minutes the Blue CB will be challenged to step into midfield
Key Points:
Effectively time movement to create overloads
Speed & weight of pass
Receive the ball side-on

Specific Practice / In Possession / Create & Exploit Overloads
15 Minutes Minimum
Welsh Way Principles:
Understand how to use the midfield unit to create & exploit overloads in central areas
Organisation / Area Size:
65x75 yards
1 central gate on halfway line in the centre circle (poles)
1 gate on each wing (cones)
25x20 box in the centre of the playing area
Practice is 9 +GK vs 7
Red team play GK-4-2-3-1 minus #9 in a GK-4-2-3
Blue team play GK-4-4-2 minus GK + 3 defenders in a 1-4-2
How:
Working with the team in possession (Red), their central midfield unit (4/8/10) are coached on how to use their movement and combination play to create & exploit overloads in central areas (coned box inside the playing area)
First 2 minutes of session - uncoached to show base-level knowledge
Minimum 5 minutes - player movement to create the overload
Minimum 5 minutes - interchange positions to find the spare player
Explanation:
With play starting with the Red GK from a goal kick, the Red team are to be coached on how to build up play from the back through combinations and movement of the central midfield 3. The Reds are to be coached on the triggers for the midfield 3 to move in order to create the overload and then how the spare player can be found by interchanging positions.
Whilst not being coached, the Blues are instructed to press high up the pitch with the exception of their CB who is to screen & defend the halfway line. If the Blues win possession, they have 5 seconds to score in transition or they forfeit possession.
Red team score (+1) by dribbling through a wide gate or passing into their striker (central pole gate)
Blue team score (+2) by winning possession and scoring within 5 seconds
Challenges, Conditions & Targets:
The practice is conditioned with the central box to give the Red midfield 3 a visual cue on where they should be looking to create the overload. The Blues are challenged to press high and try to force a mistake.
Key Points:
Effectively time movement to create overloads
Speed & weight of pass
Receive the ball side-on
