Activity Title:

Basic Technical Warm-Up – Coach-Led Setup

Equipment Required:

  • 10 Cones
(Used to mark grids, lanes, or movement zones based on the warm-up design)

Setup:

  • The coach arranges 10 cones to create a designated warm-up area.

  • Players begin with low-intensity movements and gradually increase intensity to prepare the body for technical and tactical work.

Purpose:

To activate key muscle groups, increase core temperature, and begin engaging technical skills such as passing, dribbling, or movement coordination.

Activity Title:

Basic Rondo (3v1) – Technical Warm-Up

Setup:

  • Grid Dimensions: 7m x 7m

  • Players: 3 attackers vs. 1 defender (3v1)

  • Ball Supply: Each group starts with 3 balls placed around the grid.

  • Coach Role: The coach keeps a ball at their feet to immediately restart play when the ball exits the area.

Activity Description:

  • A simple 3v1 possession rondo to develop ball retention, support angles, scanning, and first-touch quality.

  • The defender works with high intensity to regain possession.

  • Once the defender wins the ball or forces a mistake, the player who lost possession rotates in to become the new defender.

  • The goal for the attacking players is to maintain possession through quick passing, movement, and awareness.

Coaching Points:

1. Support & Positioning:

  • Create angles of support as the ball moves – players should shift and adjust their positioning continuously.

  • Support at different depths: One player at level, one at an angle or slightly behind, to give depth and width.

  • Position in open space, not behind defenders – find passing lanes.

  • Ensure the ball carrier always has two clear options to pass.

2. Awareness & Scanning:

  • Players must scan before receiving the ball – check for defender location, teammate options, and space.

  • Head up, eyes active – make decisions before the ball arrives.

3. Technical Detail:

  • First touch should be:

    • Away from pressure

    • Into space

    • Set up for the next action (pass or dribble)

  • Use appropriate surfaces of the foot – inside for control, sole to stop, outside to escape pressure.

4. Decision-Making:

  • When the ball carrier is under pressure:

    • Supporting players must move closer to offer immediate options.

    • Be available at shorter angles to relieve pressure.

  • When the ball carrier is not under pressure:

    • Supporting players can stretch the space, increase the distance, and position to receive forward.

Progression Ideas (Optional):

  • Add a second defender (3v2) for increased difficulty.

  • Introduce touch limits to encourage quicker decision-making (e.g., 2-touch max).

  • Use a counting system to track consecutive successful passes and promote competition.

Drill: Passing Sequence

Equipment:

  • 12 Cones (Sticks)
  • 4 Balls

Objective:
This drill focuses on developing passing accuracy, movement off the ball, and receiving technique. The aim is to build consistency and fluidity in passing sequences while ensuring proper body positioning for effective play.

Instructions:

  • Player A passes the ball to Player B.
  • Player B then passes the ball to Player C.
  • Player C completes the sequence by passing the ball to Player D.

Coaching Points:

  • Player B: As you receive the ball, open up your body to scan the field and assess your options. After receiving, quickly move into space to offer a passing option and maintain fluidity in the drill.
  • Player D: When receiving the ball, ensure you use your back foot to control it and immediately play forward. This promotes quicker ball circulation and enhances attacking transitions.
  • Consistency: Encourage all players to maintain consistent passing accuracy throughout the drill. Focus on proper weight and timing of the passes to ensure smooth ball movement.

This drill emphasizes dynamic passing, awareness, and effective receiving, helping players develop their technical and decision-making skills in a passing sequence.

6. Basic Rondo (20 mins)

Session Setup and Structure:

  • Player Numbers: Depending on the number of players available, stations are set up with varying formats (2v2+2, 3v3+4, 2v2+4, etc.). The exact configuration will adapt based on total player count.
  • Coach Role: The coach will provide a supply of balls and restart play after each transition.
  • Target Players: A key aspect of the session is the use of target players at the end of the box, particularly if there are larger groups. These target players are prioritized for the attacking team in the final phase of play.
  • Transition: If the defending team wins the ball, they immediately transition into attack and become the possession team.

Practice Explanation:

  • Objective for Possession Team: The possession team must complete a minimum of three passes before releasing a player into the next box. The goal is to break the last defensive line with a penetrating pass.
  • Penetrating Pass: The pass to break the defensive line must be received by a runner, not directly to the target player.
  • Game Flow: Once the ball is passed into the next box, the game continues with the same setup and objectives. Depending on numbers, possession may turn over after a turnover or at a timed interval.
  • Offside Line: The center line functions as an offside line.

Progressions:

  • Inside Players’ Runs: Players in possession can now make penetrating runs. The pass that breaks the defensive line must come from a player in the 7 or 11 position.
  • No Passing Limit: There is no restriction on the number of passes before breaking through the defensive line.

Scoring:The penetrating pass must be collected by a player making a run, not passed directly to a target player. This ensures the importance of dynamic off-the-ball movement.

Timing:

  • 4 sets of 3-minute efforts, with 30 seconds rest in between.

Coaching Points:

  • Patience in Build-Up: Encourage players to remain patient in their build-up play. The focus should be on finding the right moment to break the defensive line with a pass.
  • Weight and Quality of Final Pass: Work on the precision and timing of the final pass. Ideally, the pass should be one-touch to speed up play.
  • Combinations to Break the Line: Encourage players to utilize various combination plays to break the defensive structure, including:
    • Straight Pass/Diagonal Run
    • Diagonal Run/Straight Pass
    • Give-and-Go to draw defenders and create space to play beyond.
    • Overlap to disrupt the defensive line and create new angles.
  • Timing of Runs and Offside Awareness: Players must time their runs well, ensuring they remain onside and can see both the ball carrier and the offside line.
  • Communication: Promote short, sharp forward movements and effective communication to coordinate with teammates during attacking phases.
  • Defensive Organization: Emphasize the importance of connecting centrally in defense to form a solid defensive line, ensuring players stay compact and organized when defending.

This structure aims to develop both attacking and defensive strategies, focusing on ball movement, timing, and coordination.
