Setup: Three defenders will be nominated and placed in a line in front of the goalkeeper. The remaining players will line up evenly behind one of five cones with a ball each. Two poles will be positioned for the defenders to get round. The coach will shout a number which corresponds to one of the attacking cones. The attacker behind this cone will advance with the ball along with the other four attackers who will leave their balls behind. The coach will then call a letter corresponding to one of the defenders who must run around the nearest pole to them and get back into position to defend the attack. Attackers will then join the end of the queue behind their cone if numbers are greater than what is required for the drill to function.
Coaching Points: Defenders should be encouraged to try and slow the play down to allow their team mate to get back in.
Defenders should communicate with each other to cover or say when they are back in shape
Attackers should be encouraged to expose the area from where the defender is missing
Attacking moves should be fast and free flowing with plenty chances on goal
Progressions: Place two mini goals at the opposite end of the pitch for defenders to score into if they win the ball from the attackers.
Rotations: This drill is tiring for defenders so it is recommended to rotate defenders regularly to ensure maximum benefit of the action.
