Transfer game

Possession transfer game focussing on pressing teams to win the ball back.

Objectives:

Improve Intensity of press

Angle of approach when defending

When to win the ball and when to cut off the passing line

Improve decision making

Create a winning mentality

Improve fitness levels

Split players into 3 equal teams.

Create 2 square grids with a 5 yard gap in between each one (Size of grid depends on the number of players.

3 Blocks of 2 mins.

Each team will take a turn to be the pressing team and gain a point for each time they win the ball. If they can find the coach with the ball they will get 2 points.

The pressing team must start on the cone and can only press when the ball enters the square zone. The in possession team must make 8 passes before switching play to the opposite zone.

On this transition, 2 new pressing players will attempt to win the ball.

Communication:

Players in possession must count their passes in sequence until they get to 8, before they can switch play. This encourages players to focus on both counting and decision making with the ball.

Physical:

Introduce a command where players will perform sprints before returning to the possession game. This can be used if quality needs to be improved or get players used to being fatigued.

Technical:

Secondary focus on the possession team who should create passing angles and a firm and accurate passing technique. Mechanics can be used to improve performance.

Play with purpose

Play starts with the Grey team defending with a back 4 and 2 CDMs against 5 attackers. The target for both teams is to score. When the phase of play ends the blue player on the left side will attack with the ball. The defending team must recover into their shape and defend by getting behind the ball, with one player pressing with other players providing cover.

As this phase ends, a second blue player will start with the ball. There will be an overload from the blue team so the grey team should remain compact and difficult to break down. This continues, with the final phase being a cross into the area from the wide player.

Introduction to the session on a tactics board followed by 4 blocks of 5 mins with a Q&A and concurrent intervention.

At the end of each block players can be rotated to ensure Defenders and midfielders get exposure to Defending.

Defending team:

To win the ball high up the pitch when there is no numerical advantage for the attacker. Press and cover with 3rd and 4th man anticipating patterns of play.

As numerical advantage develops for the attacking team, how should the defending team adopt their approach? Remain compact with good distances. Ensure defenders don't get beat easily.

As each phase starts, defending team must recover and protect the goal. Recovery runs if they are caught out of position.

Defending team must be mindful of their positional play when they are attacking and not get caught out on the counter attack. Midfielders support play and look to build up play rather than in silos.
