The purpose of this session is to teach the players technical defensive skills - body position, shielding, build confidence on the ball and strength
The arrival activity is a fun game that helps develop core strength. It then moves into small sided games and then into 1v1 practices

See the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Football/Soccer images.
EQUIPMENT:
4 pop up goals / mini goals / or cones for goals
Bibs
cones / flat markers
balls
SETUP:
Setup 2 mini pitches with goals at either end and a series of squares in the between. Each square will be a 1v1 so create as many squares as necessary - 10 players = 5 squares. If you have an odd number one square can be a 2v1
PRACTICE:
Start 2 games of small sided football on each pitch - 3v2s
COACHING POINTS:
Teams of 3 try to use space and maximise the overload
If using a large pitch, look to maximise space and passing
If using a small pitch look to protect the ball / shielding
Teams of 2 try to delay the attacking team
Try not to jump into tackles and wait for the right time / when the ball moves away from the feet of the attacker.
Both teams
In possession - attack with speed
transition into possession - move into space / support player with ball
out of possession - hold positions and look to delay attackers
transition out of possession - run back into defensive positions and get between the ball and the goal

flatmarkers
balls
bibs
SETUP
Create enough squares to create a 1v1s - 10 players = 5 squares
PRACTICE:
Bring the players into the squares and put them into pairs and put a ball in the centre of the each square. Put one set of players at the edge of the square and one player stood between the ball and the player at the edge.
On the whistle the player at the edge has to run into the square and try and touch the ball with his hands, the player stood in front of the ball must stop the other player from touching the ball, by standing in front of it a shielding it. But the cannot touch the ball.
Play for 2 minutes then switch players round.
COACHING POINTS:
Let them start off and play the game for a few miniutes then give some coaching point
Body position - stand side on to stop the opposition from going through your legs to touch the ball
Strength - use body strength to stop the opposition from getting the ball
Ball position - don't stand too close to the ball, put space between you and the ball
PROGRESSION
Players on the inside are now allowed to touch the ball, show them how to put their body in between the player and the ball, and move the ball while shielding it. Both players muct try and keep the ball in the square, if a player kicks the ball out then the other player is given the ball.
PROGRESSION
Both players start on opposaite sides of the square and on the whistle must run in and try to get to the ball and shield it from the other player
PROGRESSION
Try and turn into a match scenario, both players start on opposite ends of the square. The yellows have to run in and get the ball and shiled it - the blues are only allowed to run in once the yellows start to move. This way it starts to help with reaction to the other players movements. Swap the players so everyone has a go.
Both players start on opposite ends of the square

If the ball is kicked out or dribbled out the other player is given the ball.
Play for 2 minutes, the winning team is the team with the most balls in their stadium at the end
PROGRESSION:
Blow the whislte during the play and the player with the ball is not allowed to run with the ball and must try and shield it. Blow agin to allow them to start running and dribbling again.

Core Work (5 mins)
Put the players in pairs.
1 player gets into a plank position - with straight arms. Ensure they get into a good position, keeping their body as straight as possible.
Player 2 has to crawl under player 1, then run round player 1's feet and crawl under again. they must do this 3 times.
Turn it into a race and the winner is the first one to crawl under his / her 3 times and then sit on his friend. They must try not to collapse.
Swap places and player 1 must crawl under player 2
