session starts off a 1 v 1 and after 5 seconds the second defender that starts behind the attacker comes into play
this is to encourage the defender of the 1 v 1 to show the attacker wide close the area show pressure but not to close and delay the attacker until the recovering defender gets back in then can make the move to win the ball
things to look out for
- Body Shape does the defender show the attacker wide by getting his body more sideways and coming at the attacker from more one side than the other if showing the attacker down the attacking left side the defender needs to turn his body near half turn to the right bent knees low centre of gravity and come at the attacker from slightly more his right side to encourage him left then delay to recovery defender gets back in
- Ball speed /Ball control how fast does the attacker run at the defender with the ball is he in control of the ball these things will help the defender decide how he closes the attacker and distance to put pressure on him to force wide and delay for long enough for recovery defender to get back in and force the attacker into a error to win the ball
the session will start 2 v 1 then into 2 v 2 with recovering defender coming in after 3 seconds 2 v 2 rotating the defenders every few minutes
step in if attacker having too much joy show the defender how to apply pressure but not to tight enough to show wide slow the play down to the second defender gets back show body shape to show attacker left or right maybe explain if attacker is left footed show them right or vice versa
in 2 v 2 there will be off side for the attacking team so the defender need to force the attacker with the ball wide get the body shape right close enough to cut off the pass but force the attacker wide for long enough for the recovering defender to get back in once he is in play

9 v 9 game 20 min 3 -3 - 2 formation
coaching points and areas to step in
let the game play first few mins
- are we rushing into tackles instead of forcing the attacker wide delaying until recovering defenders support
- is the defence recovering back to help the delay
- when delaying is the attacker in control of the ball? while running at pace Ball speed? how do we pressure but not jump in getting distance body shape correct to slow the attacker down and delay
step in move the ball recreate correct and finish on success
personal performance
make sure and get the players to understand how the body shape and difference between pressing and applying pressure when stepping in to show how the delay works and have more success
