Tic-Tac-Toe

Soccer Tic-Tac-Toe Warm-Up

1. Set two cones about 3 yards apart as the starting point.

2. Using cones, create a tic-tac-toe board about 10 yards from the starting cones.

3. Divide the team into four groups- two games going at the same time

4. Give the first three players in group one yellow pinnies, and the first three players in group two green pinnies.

This will be a relay style race to win tic-tac-toe.

Drill Instructions

-On the coaches command, the first player in each line, player 1, race to the tic-tac-toe board and drop a pinnie in one of the nine spaces. Players race back to the line and after slapping hands with the next player in line, player 2 starts.

-Player 2 race to the tic-tac-toe board and drops a pinnie in one of the spaces. These players race back to the line and after slapping hands with the next player in line, player 3 starts.

-Player 3 races to the tic-tac-toe board to drop a pinnie in one of the spaces to block or attempt to win the game.

-If the game is not won, these players race back to the line and after slapping hands with the next player in line, player 4 starts.

-Since player 4 does not have a pinnie in hand, this player races to the tic-tac-toe board and can move ONE of their colored pinnies to an open space. This continues until one of the teams win the game

Challenges, Conditions or Targets:

  • Make players run backwards to the tic-tac-toe board.
  • Players dribble a soccer ball. They can stop the ball beside the grid, place the bib and turn back to pass the ball to the next player.

Guard the Castle

Set Up:

Players stay with their groups of 4 from tic-tac-toe

Set up a grid that is 12 X 12 yards.

-One player starts with a pinnie. This is the defender/castle guard

-Place a disc cone with the ball on top of it in the middle of the grid; this will become the “castle”

-The attacking players begin with one soccer ball

-The three attackers should pass the ball around the defender in the grid in attempt to knock down the castle with a pass.

-A point is awarded when the castle is knocked down. The castle is considered knocked down when the ball is knocked off the cone with a pass.

-Once the attackers score 3 points, switch the defender.

Challenges, Conditions or Targets:

-Require players to complete a certain number of passes before they are allowed to knock down the castle

Coaching points:

  • Instruct players to get their heads up to find the pass.
  • pass the ball with proper weight on the ball.
  • moving around the grid in order to find open space
  • ok to dribble the ball to space or beat the defender before making the pass

Four Corners

Four Corners

In a 40X40 yard area, create four grids that are about 5x5 yard in each corner of the larger grid. *Use grids from previous drill (decrease size)

Split the group into two teams and put one team in pinnies

Focusing on team possession. A point is scored by passing the ball to a teammate that is inside one of the corner grids.

-Teams can score in any of the corners. They cannot score in the same area twice in a row.

Coaching points:

-Weight and accuracy of the passing

-Make sure players without the ball are supporting the player with the ball at all times

-Change the point of attack and are not forcing passes into congested areas

Challenges, Conditions or Targets:

-Do not allow players to stand inside the grids waiting for a pass. Instead, instruct the players to work on the timing of the runs and timing of the pass to connect inside the grid
