GK catch and throw

Session Title: Goalkeeper Catch & Quick Distribution

Objective

  • Improve handling (catching shots)
  • Develop quick decision-making
  • Practice accurate throwing distribution to left/right targets
  • Add reaction under pressure

Duration

15–20 minutes

Organisation

  • 1 goalkeeper
  • 2 outfield players (shooters)
  • 2 mini goals (or cone gates) placed:
    • One to the left side
    • One to the right side
  • Shooters positioned ~10–15 yards from goal, slightly off-center

How It Works

  • Shooter A takes a shot (controlled, realistic pace).
  • Goalkeeper:
    • Gets into position
    • Catches the ball cleanly
  • Immediately after the catch:
    • Goalkeeper must quickly throw into either the left or right mini goal
  • As soon as distribution is made:
    • Shooter B takes their shot
  • Repeat continuously in a rhythm

Coaching Points

  • Set position early (balanced, on toes)
  • Hands in correct shape (W shape for higher balls, scoop for low)
  • Secure first touch – no rebounds
  • Quick transition (catch → decision → throw)
  • Accuracy over power in distribution
  • Encourage head up before throwing (awareness)

Progressions

  • Add a call from coach (e.g., “left” or “right”) to force decision-making
  • Shooter follows in for rebound pressure (adds realism)
  • Vary shot types:
    • Low driven
    • Mid-height
    • Slightly off-centre
  • Time limit (e.g., must distribute within 3 seconds)

 Regressions

  • Reduce shot power
  • Allow bounce before catch
  • Increase distance between goalkeeper and mini goals

Challenges / Targets

  • 10 successful clean catches + accurate throws in a row
  • Count how many accurate distributions out of 20 attempts

Coaching Cues

  • Catch first, don’t parry
  • Eyes up before release
  • Be explosive after the catch

Fast Reactions - Cone Roll Chaos

Deflection Reaction Drill (Cone Roll Chaos)

Objective

Improve a goalkeeper’s reaction speed, handling, and decision-making when dealing with deflected or unpredictable balls.

Setup

  • Place 6–10 cones in a straight or slightly staggered line (about 1–2 meters in front of the goalkeeper).
  • Space cones about 30–50 cm apart.
  • Goalkeeper starts in a set position behind the cones (on or just in front of the goal line).
  • Server (coach/player) stands 8–12 meters away, directly facing the cones.

How It Works

  • The server rolls or passes the ball firmly along the ground toward the line of cones.
  • As the ball hits the cones, it will deflect unpredictably (left, right, bobble, slow down, or pop up).
  • The goalkeeper must:
    • Stay balanced and react quickly.
    • Adjust footwork instantly.
    • Decide whether to:
      • Catch (if clean and safe)
      • Parry away from goal (if awkward or dangerous)

Coaching Points

  • Stay on toes, not flat-footed.
  • Keep hands ready and in front.
  • Focus on late reaction—don’t commit too early.
  • Emphasise safe parries wide, not back into danger areas.
  • Encourage quick recovery after each save.

Progressions

  • Increase speed of the pass for less reaction time.
  • Add a second server for random timing.
  • Use different ball types (e.g., slightly underinflated ball for more erratic movement).
  • Call out “catch” or “parry” mid-roll to force decision-making.
  • Add a rebound shot after the initial save.

Advanced Variation

After the initial deflection:

  • A second player immediately takes a first-time shot.
  • Goalkeeper must recover quickly and set again.
  • Reps
  • 6–10 reps per set
  • 2–4 sets depending on intensity

GK focused SSG Keeper wars

Game: “3-Zone Keeper Wars”

Objective

  • Improve goalkeeper shot-stopping, distribution, communication, and decision-making under pressure

Setup

  • Area: ~30x20 yards, split into 3 horizontal zones
    • Defensive zone (with GK)
    • Middle zone
    • Attacking zone
  • Teams: 4v4 + 2 goalkeepers
  • Each team has 1 GK in their defensive zone

Rules

  • Build Through the Keeper
    • Play always starts from the goalkeeper
    • Teams must pass through all 3 zones before scoring
  • GK Involvement is Mandatory
    • Every attack must include at least one pass back to the goalkeeper
    • Encourages footwork and distribution
  • Shot Conditions
    • Players can only shoot in the attacking zone
    • Encourages GK to face realistic, closer-range shots
  • Transition Moments
    • When possession changes, the new team must immediately involve their GK
    • Forces quick reactions and positioning
  • Bonus Points
    • +1 point if a goal comes from a GK assist
    • +1 point if GK makes a save and quickly distributes to start a counter that leads to a goal

Coaching Focus (GK)

  • Positioning relative to ball and defenders
  • Quick decision-making (pass vs hold vs clear)
  • Communication (“turn”, “man on”, etc.)
  • Handling + shot-stopping technique
  • Distribution types (short, driven, clipped)

Progressions

  • Limit touches for outfield players (e.g., 2-touch)
  • Allow GK to move slightly outside their zone
  • Add a neutral player to overload build-up
  • Introduce a time limit to score after regaining possession

  • Why It Works
  • GKs are constantly involved (not just standing in goal)
  • Replicates real match scenarios (build-up + transitions)
  • Encourages modern “sweeper keeper” behaviours
