Description

Organisation (Practice Layout & Transition):

Players bibbed up on arrival and cones for small sided game and technical practice set up before session to allow transition to flow better. Coach will deliver technical points before block one begins as soon as players are ready to begin (stood on cones and bibbed up). Coach will deliver fly-bys and drive bys throughout the session and freeze coaching points if needs be.

During block one of the small sided game coach will adopt a laissez faire coaching style in order to let the practice flow unless an intervention is desperately needed (Pill et al., 2021)

30x10 field for small sided game.

10 yard space between each cone for skill practice.

Equipment:

Cones, small goals, Bibs.

Health and safety: Ensure space around pitch is clear to avoid any collisions from players. Also ensure all players have no jewlery, are wearing appropriate footwear (astroturf boots), and check for any injuries at the beginning of the session.

Screen 1 (20 mins)

Adaptations (Progressions & Regressions):

Block 1 (10 mins): Split players into 3 teams of 3 and each group stands on a cone. Ball starts on the top of the triangle. Player at the front of the line plays a pass into the cone on their right. Once pass is played, passer follows their pass and joins line on their right. This cycle continues for every player.

Block 2 (10 mins): Players stay in same position. Ball again starts at the top of the triangle. In this block, once players play the pass they follow and decelerate around half way to receive the ball back off the original receiver. Original receiver then makes a run around their cone ready to receive the ball in front of them to play to the next cone. Once again, after passes are finished, join at the back of the next cone.

Block 3 (1.5 mins): Continuing on from block 2 with a 2nd ball introduced. This will ensure players maintain a high intensity throughout. Light forfeit is issued if a group is caught up by other ball.

Challenges, Conditions or Targets:

Receive ball on the back foot

Control ball with inside of foot.

Pass ball with inside of foot.

Heavy weight on the pass.

Receiving foot pointing in the direction you'd like the ball to go (cone you are passing too).

Standing foot pointing in the direction of where the pass is meant to go.

Adaptations (Progressions & Regressions):

Block 1 (10 mins): Small sided game with a neutral fixed into the box in the middle. No players can enter the neutrals box. Neutral is on whatever team plays them the ball. Once ball is out of play coach will play a new ball into a players feet ready to restart the game. If a player scores straight after receiving the ball back off the neutral it counts as 2 goals. neutral can not score.

Block 2 (10 mins): Small sided game continues but box is removed and the neutral can roam anywhere. Still counts as 2 goals if a goal is scored through the neutral. Neutral can still not score.

Challenges, Conditions or Targets:

Ball stays under head height.

Aim to play 4 or more passes before scoring.

Same technical points throughout the game as screen 1.
