3v3 SSG
Variations:
1) Start players on Field, 3 vs 3, unopposed for 20 seconds before allowing the play switch to opposed. Work on 1st Defender applying pressure and setting cover and balance centrally.
2) Players start on halfway and must run around the corner poles before being able to play. Import for defenders to quickly designate a 1st defender to apply pressure and the remaining two players to conform around him/her depending on the situation.
Rules:
- Teams get 5 minutes to attack/defend before its switched. The attacking team is always facing the large goals.
- The first variation has an unopposed segment, to get players comfortable with the concepts of delay, coverage and balance. After 20 seconds the whistle sounds and players can play without restrictions.
- In Variation 2, Players must communicate early how many players go from each side and upon the whistle the will run from the halfway and around the corner poles to become active.
Notes:
- Can the 2nd and 3rd defender cover the central area? Condense if the central player becomes the 1st defender.
- How far are our distances between players? Players must be close enough to intercept a pass between each other (roughly 5 metres)
- Prioritise the player, look to keep shape with body between the player and goal. Apply pressure when they turn their back.
- Fast - Slow - Low with arm extended.
- Diagonal Movement to protect the central area quicker. Moving horizontal leaves space in behind and would take 2 movements to drop deeper.

3-3-1 vs 2-3-2
Variations:
1) Unopposed (Short, 2-3 minutes)
2) Opposed
Rules:
- 1st Variation allows the players to get comfortable shifting the point of defence behind the first defender to cover the central area. This shouldn't go for more than 2-3 minutes and allows the coaches to talk and intervein without stopping play.
- 2nd Variation allows for free play. Interventions should be short and conscience.
- Ball always starts with offensive teams keeper.
- Swap teams after 5 minutes. (1 Minute Unopposed for second group as they would be aware of the aims and focus from the first walk though, however more time can be spent if needed if players are unsure. A lot of these teaching points can be done in while the session is in motion).
Notes:
- Which player Goes and who provides cover and balance?
- How does the Team move to provide balance? Diagonal movement
- Learning outcome: Effective pressing (watching for cues) to stop/delay central penetration.
- Can the 9 arc their un to close off offensive players to one side and limit the chance of a switch. Can they continue applying back-pressure to force a pass or offensive action.
- Can the 7/10/11 look to jump from 2nd/3rd defender to 1st defender as the ball moves horizontally.
- Can fullbacks look to maintain shape and only jump to when 1) the opposition play behind the second line of defence, or 2) The offensive team switches and the fullback is the closest person who can apply pressure.
- Can the keeper be positioned properly? Edge of the 6 yard box to limit space between Last line of Defence and the goal.

Warm Up Rondo (20 mins)
Warm up Rondo
Rules:
- Outside team must try and keep the ball and try to make 20 successful passes. They can also get 2 points for passing between 2 defending players. If either of these happen, the defenders must do one lap around the circle (Sprint).
- Outside group will have three variations:
1) 1 touch
2) Minimum two touch
3) Free play
- No balls in the air till the last round.
- If the defending team wins the ball, the player who lost it on the outside goes in with the two players either side of him.
Notes:
- Aim To use the principles of Delay, Coverage and Balance to apply pressure and stay compact.
- See if the players balancing can determine the body shape of the passing players early to gauge when to jump.
- Can the original 1st defender drop back into shape quickly to minimise gaps between the line.
- Communication? Can we hear the defender talking and communicating with their team-mates on who applies pressure?
- Can the Second defender and third defender keep a distance between the first defender to avoid any passes under the 1st defender?
Considerations:
- Rondo is in a shape of a square to create pockets closed of pockets in which the defenders can close down if the offensive team isn't fast enough. A circle or diamond is good in an offensive setting as it helps the players make diagonal passes which are more realistic to square passes in game. However while the focus is defensive principles, creating these pockets of limited angles helps allow the defensive unit to use their first defender to cover off a square pass and intelligently use the second and third defender to close off the ball.
