Description

PRactice which works on defending team giving away the ball within the middle third and then there being a counter attack.

Teaching around this focus on delaying the attack, stopping line breaking passes and keeping the play in front of them until support can recover to even up the numbers

Overview

Explanation:

Problem that occured frequently last season.

What: Turning over possession when passing into midfield causing a number of our players to be the wrong side of the ball and allowing opposition to counter against our defence. Resulting on passes splitting the centrebacks and allowing 1v1

Who: Primarily the 3 Centre Backs. Secondary the CDM

When: Against an opposition sitting within a mid-block generally playing in a 433 /4231

Where: Moving from defensive third to Mid Third playing centrally (game model is looking to build centrally within our own half)

Why:

- Game model of building centrally to then play wide allowing the WB to push high does help facilitate the issue

- CB not taking advantage of the space on offer and /or forcing a pass causing the inital issue

- Defence not compacting in early enough and leaving gaps to be played through

- Indecion as to whether to press the ball or drop off meaning a staggered line and keeping a CF onside

- When engaged by a opposition player carrying the ball getting diving into the tackle rather than delaying and waiting for support

- Communication

Session Objective: By the end of the session my team will have a clear idea on how to defend against counter attacks in a BP>BPO environment

Passing Practice (20 mins)

Explanation:

Passing practice to give opportunities to practice defensive movements

- Player A passes to Player B

- Player B receives to play around the mannequin and pass to Player C

- Player C dribbles at the end line

- Player A comes across and maintains good body position - low and side on

- As Player C gets to the end line they join the back of group A and player A goes through the dynamic warm up area and joins the opposite side player B (practice on both sides)

Progression

- can Player C go past player A (no tackling)

Positioning Game (30 mins)

Explanation:

Directional Game 4v4

- Team in possession play two touch and look to play into the target area for a receiving player to run in and control

- Only one of the attacking team can press beyond the flat markers this is to force the defending team to trigger turnovers

- If the ball is given away then the person who gave away the ball has to go through the circuit at the top before recovering to join the defence. If a goal is scored then the receiving player completes the circuit whilst the other team counters in a 4v3 this replicates the recovering defenders and gives the defending side a goal /reason to hold play up

- goals positioned at angles to replicate through balls

Coaching Points:

Player Tasks (Coaching Cues)

- upon turnover can the defenders position to stop balls being played through (defenders to compress horizontally)

- when engaged by an attacker can the defenders support each other whilst blocking passing lanes (pressure cover balance with the pressure being aware of cover shadow - Q. to players do they know what pressure cover balance is)

- communication between the defenders - pressure, slide, delay

- can the defenders not give the striker an easy opportunity to pass them (when dealing with a striker stand up and don't commit. Focus is on showing wide and delaying until support has been received)

Game Training (20 mins)

Explanation:

Wave style attack which is broken into two attacking parts; a structured attack straight on and then a broken attack with defensive players not in shape

- Attacking team 1 start within grid (where def team 2 are lined up above)

- Defending team one play a ball to attacking team 1.

- Attacking team one attack defending team 1 in a 4v4 - defenders cannot engage until over the half way line (4th defender recovers from beyond att team)

- After the attack has concluded then coach (in black) passes to one of the attacking players who then attack again within a broken 4v4

- Upon conclusion of the second attack Att team 1 join back of Att team 2 and the process is replicated with Def team and Attack team 2

- If defenders win /intercept then they either play into the coach, or, into the mini goals

Coaching Points

Playing Tasks (coaching cue)

Team Task - Defenders to delay the attack and show attacking players wide to limit scoring opportunities

Part 1.

- Can the defender who is attacked position to force the attacking player away from central attacking areas (As attacker comes at you then position on inside shoulder and show the attacker wide

- Can the other defenders take positions to support the defender being engaged (As the defender who is 1v1 confronts the attacker can the other two take positions to supply cover and balance positions - BUT - remain with enough spacing to shift across should the play be switched

- Should an overlap occur then can one of the defenders track the pass and deny the chance to attack the goal - (If an overlap occurs then central CB goes with the runner should the ball be played ensuring that they don't allow the attacking player to cut inside /shoot unopposed - Q. how does this impact the other defenders positions)

- Can the closest defender stop the player on the ball from shooting without committing themselves (As attacker approaches the defender then the defender uses their cover shadow and line of attack to place between the centre of the goal and the ball - making sure that they dont commit and dive into a tackle)

- Can the defenders slow down the attack to allow the CDM to recover to provide support (As the attacking team approach then defenders stay on their feet, block passing lanes and force the attacking team into lateral passes)

Part 2

- can the closest player deny forward progression and force the attacker away from the goal (as the pass is played into the attacker the closest defender applies immediate pressure with the aim to stop forward progression)

secondary task - as the closest player presses the ball player can the other three organise themselves and position to assist presser (Form a back three and provide cover and balance to the presser, if central then position cover either side of the presser with balance player on open side of the field)

Secondary Focus - Standard player communication: Press, Slide, Drop, Up, Delay

Training Game (10 mins)

The pitch is divided within 4 horizontal grids (using the half way line). If the ball is turned over in the middle zone in your half and a goal results from it then that goal is worth double

As pre season and working on fitness then this would be murder ball

- ball must be back in play within 3 seconds or it becomes the other teams ball

- defending team must be within one horizontal grid of the ball upon its turnover

- all players must be in the opposition half for a goal (non turnover) to be counted

Shooting Practice (10 mins)

Explanation:

Competitive Shooting Practice

- split the players into 2 groups (defenders and attackers)

- Attacking team attack in a 3v2

- Defenders start with the ball and play out to the attacking team who then attack

- Defenders win the ball is forced outside of the marked off area and /or the attacking team miss

- Each team attack for a period of time - winner is most goals - tie break is shots on target (or diving saves made etc etc)

Coaching Points

- Pressure /Cover model for defenders

- Attackers must create an overlap so receiving player needs to attack central
