Warm up - Rotten egg (5 mins)

Setup

No sticks or balls needed, just a single bib
Players stand in a circle facing inwards with their hand behind their backs
Diameter of circle should be at least 5 metres, maybe more

Run this game for 5 mins

Game

To start the game, the coach hands the bib to one of the players

The player walks around the outside of the circle and puts the bib in the hands of one of the other players

The player receiving the bib must chase the other player for around the circle and try and catch the other player before they get back to their original space in the circle.

Player must complete at least on lap of the circle before returning to their starting place.

Once the players are back in position, the coach repeats the process.

RACE! (10 mins)

RACE!

In groups of 3 or 4 (no more as players must keep warm and not stand around/queue)

Focus 2: Passing and Receiving

Each team has 9 balls

Aim is for each player to carry ball to 14m mark, leave ball there and race back team

Once all 9 balls are at the 14m cone, player runs to ball and must pass it back to their team then run back to team

Once ball is back with team and stopped dead, next player may repeat (other team mates can assist with the stopping)

First team to get all 9 balls back wins

Swapping Game (20 mins)

SET UP

  • Two teams. Each team is split across two pitches.
  • Each team has a goal to attack towards and a goal to defend. This must be the same direction for each team on both pitches.
  • When a player scores, that player immediately moves to the other pitch, joining the same coloured team.
  • There should be lots of movement of players from one pitch to the other and this will naturally lead to players having an underload or overload.
  • How do we react in these situations?
  • How can we react in the situations?
If you have a large group, create several pitches for scoring players to keep moving down the pitches.

Small sided game - small space (25 mins)

SET UP

  • Each team has two gates to score into.
  • Score by making a pass to your teammate in the gate. Keep rotating the players in the gates.
  • If you score, keep possession of the ball.
  • Swap goals halfway through the activity so that each team scores on different sides of the pitch.
What do you need to focus on when playing in a small space?
