Basic Formation

  • When playing out of the back, above (white team) shows the basic formation. Center backs go wide within a passing lane from the goalkeeper, inside the build-out line which is the box. 

  • Note the width and how stretched the team is, accounting for the full extension of the horizontal field. This is the only moment of the game where the team will be that stretched

First Pass

  • Once the ball gets played to one of the center backs (right center back #4 in example), the wider players 'pinch in' to more centered areas. 

  • If the ball from #4 returns to the goalkeeper, then the team spreads out again

  • Once, one of the center backs gets possession of the ball, this players to have options to pass forward (#2, #6, #8, etc)

Roles

  • Players in close proximity (#2, # 6) to player ball (#4), have to remain in open passing lanes. In getting ready to receive ball, body shape is important (players have to be sideways in half-turned position, with an eye forward, not fully square towards the teammate facing them).

  • Players in close proximity to the ball (#8, for example), have to decide whether to get into a passing lane, or if to become a passing lane for the next play

  • Players farther from the ball (#9), have to match the direction of the ball and be ready to step into a passing lane (green line)
