COACHING DETAILS: When playing proper small-sided games, it's important for coaches to 'coach on the run'. This means only stopping the flow of the game if it's absolutely necessary e.g., when wanting to stress a coaching point that's relevant to the objective of the training session. For example, if your training session is focusing on 'running with the ball', then you'd only interrupt the flow of the game when wanting to coach a key aspect of running with ball. Additionally, coaches shouldn't stop the game (approx. 25-30mins in duration) more than 2-3 times (approx. once every 10mins). Players just want to play the game! So let them play, offering the majority of your coaching points 'on the run'.

Principles of Play: It's also important to coach kids the 'Principles of Play' (POP) during their small-sided games. Like every sport, Football (Soccer) is built on certain principles that should inform and shape our coaching sessions. For a helpful summary of the Principles of Play, please refer to your Club Coaching Handbook. For this session, focus on the following Principles:
Attacking Principle:
Defending Principle:
See the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Football/Soccer images.
Organization:
• 3v3 Game to 4 Goals (Directional Game towards two goals per team) with a Target player inside both end zones
• The attacking team must combine with their Target player before scoring. In order to enter the space beyond the cones, they must link up with the target player too. This reinforces the defending team to track runs after lines are broken.
Coach/Facilitator Feedback:
• “Balance space & opponents"
• “Compact Unit”
• How can you maintain a compact shape when defending at all times?
Progressions:
• Allow the target to show beyond the end zone/coned area, which forces the defending team to scan behind them and screen passing lanes
• Add a 2nd Target player to reinforce compactness and closing gaps

Organization:
- 3v3 tournament
- Players split into 4 teams
- Each team plays each other twice
Activity
- 3v3 tournament to assess the learning that has taken place through the course of the session
- Coaches to encourage positivity while making good decisions (are we dribbling, passing or shooting)
Coaches Emphasis
- Focus on dribbling away from pressure.
- Teammates look to get into space to receive.
- Make a triangle Shape

4v4 + 4 Quick shooting game - have side players if you want to include all the team
Diamond shape so it encourage and produces more shooting opportunities .
Can we get shots off quickly - may want to limit touches to make more realistic.
Working on movement, creating angles and ability to strike quickly under pressure
If we cant shoot can we play quickly to team mate so they can shoot
Rebounds and reactions of team mates when shot is struck.
Conditions
Outside players on touch limit
1st time goal counts as 2 goals
