Description

This session is designed to encourage quick movement using fast feet. A good tempo will be required to make this session a success, having quick feet will help with the movement for each of the drills. Using the deflector ramp will create some real game situations and a good way to end the session having some fun with the goalkeeper.

Coaching points will be making sure the goalkeeper is on there toes for the footwork and go through any techniques for the diving and the handling. For the reaction drills it is important the goalkeeper holds then reacts to the situation and not guess.

Warm Up (5 minutes)

  • x5 Volley's
  • Footwork through the ladder, then receive a volley from the coach - (x4/5 each side).
  • Footwork through the ladder, low dive towards the cone - (x4/5 each side).
  • Finish the warm up with a mix of the above.

Activation (10 Minutes)

  • Goalkeeper to start behind the red cone, quick side movement to cone 1, then back to the start, quick movement to cone 2, back to the start, quick movement to cone 3, back to the start.  ( x2 reps - switch sides.)

Progression

  • Same movement, using the the cones has mini goal's use a variation of volleys, low dives/scoops, footwork and distribution ( x2 reps on each variation)

Movement and Reactions (10/15 minutes)

Goalkeeper to start on the line - coach will call out a colour for the goalkeeper to touch, goalkeeper to return to the line for the next colour.  (complete all colours - x2 reps)

  • Progression  >  Goalkeeper to start on the line, coach calls out a colour - receive volley/shot - (x3 =1 rep - x3 reps)
  • Progression 1 >  Goalkeeper to move from the line to receive a pass, coach will call a number for the goalkeeper to move into, on the next call, the goalkeeper moves back into the main goal for a shot. 
  • Progression 2 >  Goalkeeper starts with his back to the server/coach , on the call the goalkeeper turns to face a shot, to add variation the coach moves around to make the goalkeeper react and change his position in the goal. (7/8shots)
  • Progression 3 >  Goalkeeper starts in the goal and the coach stands in front of goal 1, on the call the goalkeeper touches the red cone and then the coach throws the ball back over the goalkeeper's head for the goalkeeper to deal with.  (x4/5 on each side - x2 reps)

Leg Burner ( 10 minutes)

Goalkeeper to start on the goal line, after each shot the goalkeeper to reset back to the line.

 

  • Touch cone 1 - receive a low shot.
  • Touch cone 2 - receive  a mid dive.
  • Touch cone 3 - receive a high dive.
  • (x2 reps) switch sides.

Deflected Shots (10 minutes)

Goalkeeper to start just off the line and deal with different types of deflected shots using a deflection ramp and a mix of cones.

  • Start centrally and the server/coach takes (5/6) short shots .
  • Move across to the angle and the server/coach takes (5/6 )shots. Progress by making the goalkeeper start centrally and then get across to deal with the deflected shot.
  • Switch sides.
  • Add some cones/items around the board centrally and the server takes longer shots from a central area - (7/8 shots)
