Warm Up/Stretch: Run through the warm up 1 time

Players will warm up by completing dynamic stretches.

1. Open the gate to the cone and back

2. Close the gate to the cone and back

3. Scoops to the cone and back

4. Lunge with twist to the cone and back (alternating legs)

5. Quad stretch to the cone and back (alternating legs)

6.High knees to the cone and back

7. Jog to the cone and back

8. Spring to the cone and back

9. Stretch any other areas that are in need

 

Duration: 10 minutes

Focus on form and going through the stretches slowly and mindfully.

Warm Up 2: 4v2

Duration: 10 minutes

Create a 15x15 yard grid for each group of 6

Each group will need 1 ball

2 players will begin in the middle and the other 4 will try to position themselves in between the cones on the outside.

 

1. The players on the inside of the grid will need to defend and try to possess the ball. While players on the outside will need to move around the grid in order to receive the ball. If a defender possesses the ball, the attacker will need to switch and go in the middle.

Progression

1. In the first 5 minutes, players will have unlimited touches. In the second half of the warm up, players will need to use 1 touch only on the outside of the grid.

 

Focus:

Players need to focus on moving for their teammates and creating passing opportunities. In the middle, defenders need to work together and talk about playing a more zone defense that will allow for them to possess the ball.

Possession with Chips to the other side

 

Set up: Make 3 grids.  20x20, 5x5,and 20x20

Separate players into teams of 4.

Coaches will feed balls for the drills and all should be on the side of the 5x5 grid

 

Duration: 20 minutes

 

Drill:

1. Coach will feed the ball to once side of the grid. 

2. Team who receives ball will need to make 4 passes within their grid before chipping it to the other side. 

3. As soon as the ball is fed to the first team, 2 players from the opposite team will need to sprint into their opponent's grid to try to defend. 

4. If the team is able to chip the ball to the other side, they will get a point.  If the defense takes it away, no point is awarded to either side.

5. Once the ball is chipped to the other side, the first team will send 2 players onto the other side to try to defend.

 

First team to 5 points will win.

 

Coaching points: Firm passes, looking up before receiving the ball, movement off the ball, quick play, and communication.

 

Progression:

1. Increase required number of passes

2. Limit the amount of touches on the ball

3. Make a time limit instead of a point system.

4 Corner Posession

 

Set up: 

Create a grid that is 40x40. At the corners of the grid create a box that is 5x5 using cones. Balls will need to be placed at one end of the grid

 

Duration: 20 minutes

 

Drill:

1.Players will be trying to maintain possession while trying to switch the field and pass it to their player in one of the corners.  

2. Each team will be working on their own and will need to pass the ball to a teammate in each of the four corners. 

3. The player receiving the ball in the corner must collect it and play out of the box in no more than 2 touches.

3. Once a team completes a pass in all four corners, that team will win. 

 

Coaching Points:

Movement off the ball, communication, firm passes, look to switch the field, play into space, and play quickly

 

Progression:

1. Limit number of touches

2. Create a minimum number of passes before going to the corners

3. Require players to pass the ball in the air to the corners. Receiver would need to collect from the air.

4. Require players in the corner to play out in one touch

7v7 to Goals

 

Setup: Use half the field for this scrimmage. Place a goal at the midfield line facing the goal at the opposite end line. Separate players into teams of 7. Hopefully there will be a total of 3 teams.  If you have fewer players, then make the grid a bit smaller and the teams smaller as well.

 

Duration: 30 minutes

 

Drill: 

1. Games will be 5 minutes in length or until a team scores 3 goals.  

2. If there is no winning team by the end of 5 minutes, the coach will switch the team with the one waiting on the outside.

3. At the end of the 5 minutes, the winning team will move off the field and a new team will come on

4. Continue this process for the duration of the drill.

 

Coaching Points: Movement off the ball, communication, quick passes, switch the field, maintain possession, and maintain shape

 

Progression: Limit number of touches, require a minimum number of passes to go to goal, require the ball to be on the fly into the net.
