3v1 Early Support
This soccer drill focuses on supporting the player with the ball including early support, moving without the ball, and good angle and distance of support.
Setup
Create two 12X12 grids with one common side. Split into 2 groups of 3 players (3 red and 3 yellow). Place3 red and 1 yellow player in one grid and the remaining 2 yellow players in the other grid. The single yellow player in the red grid will start as defender.
Instructions
Play a 3v1 in the first grid, focus on early support, good angles, good distance, and giving the player with the ball two passing options.
The defender's objective is to gain possession and pass to a player on their team in the other grid. If this happens, that defender joins his team in the grid and the person who caused the turnover also joins the grid and becomes defender. In the new grid play 3v1 again.
Variations
limit the number of touches
Coaching Points
Early support - start supporting before the ball is received.
Good angle - support in undefended space where the pass cannot be intercepted by the defender.
Move without the ball
Support both sides of the attacker with the ball.
Focus on a good first touch in space towards a supporting player.
Use deception when playing.
THIS ACTIVITY CAN ALSO BE PLAYED 4 VERSUS 2

Equipment
- Balls, Cones
- Bibs required for defenders but the defenders keep the bibs in hand, they do not put them on
Organization
- 30x15 grid (2x15x15)
- 8 players, 6 attackers (bib not required), 2 defenders with bibs in hand
Implementation
- Attackers play 4v2 in one grid
- Objective for the attackers is to make 5 consecutive passes OR split the 2 defenders - if they do either one, then the ball is played into the other grid (where there are 2 awaiting players) where 2 attackers join the 2 awaiting attackers and the activity continues 4v2.
- If an attacker makes a mistake or gives up possession then they take the bib from one of the defenders and they become a defender
Coaching Points
- Coach the principles of attack - Penetration, Support, Mobility, Shape (Width and Depth - make the attacking playing area as big as possible) and Improvisation
- Quality passing and receiving
- Message in the pass
- Receiver receiving the ball with the far foot giving them the option to play/see all of their supporting players
Progression
- Activity could also be played 5v2
- Only when the attackers SPLIT the defenders can they pass the ball into the other grid
- Increase the amount of consecutive passes before the ball can be transferred into the next grid

Equipment: Balls, Bibs, Cones
Rules/Objectives: The pitch is split into 2 playing areas with 4 attacking players in each box. Start with 4v2 in Box A, where players have to make 5 passes before transferring the ball to Box B. As the ball is transferred the 2 new defenders who were waiting in the rest zone enter Box B. After 5 passes switch again. If one of the attacking teams gives up possession then they become the defending team. The 2 defenders in the rest zone may intercept forward passes.
Coaching Points:
- Encourage attacking team to make the field as big (width and depth) as possible

Directional Game - North-South-East-West
Equipment: Balls, Bibs, Cones, Nets (if available) - One team scores North-South, the other scores East-West
Directional Game: 4v4 with 2 neutral players which makes it 6v4 when in possession. One team aims to score in the goals marked "X", the other team aims to score in the goals marked "O".
Coaching Points:
- When the defending team creates transition and becomes the attacking team - how quickly can they go from small to big and attack one of the goals.

Equipment
- Balls, Bibs, Cones
- Ensure that extra balls are placed along the end lines
Organization
- Play in a space that is appropriate for the age and ability of the players
- 5v5 safe/neutral area in the middle of the grid
Implementation
- North, South, East, West Game with a neutral player
- One team plays North-South, the other team plays East-West
- A target player for each team is placed on the end line
- The target players MUST move side to side across the line
- The game is continuous - 1 point are scored every time the ball is played into the target player
- The player that played the ball into the target player takes their spot on the line
- If the team can play through the neutral player to a target player then they receive 2 points
- Players can't tackle the neutral player in their safe area
Coaching Points
- Encourage the attacking team to exploit the width - this will help to create space in central areas

Equipment
- Balls, Bibs, Cones
Organization
- 15x20, 20x25 or 25x30 yard field - depending on age and experience of the players
- 3v3 or 4v4 in the middle with 2 target players - one on each end
Implementation
- One team goes East-West, the other team goes North-South
- Teams score points by passing the ball to their target player on the end line
- Once the ball is passed to the target player on the end line the player who passed the ball to the target player enters the game and the player that passed them the ball takes their spot on the end line (make-it-take-it)
- Target players should move across the line
- Once the ball is in play after a point the team MUST advance or try to go forward, they are not permitted to go back once they have clear possession
- Upon transition the teams can score in any direction
Coaching Points
- How quickly (how few passes) can the team get the ball forward to their target player on the end line?
- Remember - priority in terms of decision making - first look is FORWARD - if the forward pass isn't on, then the player should look left or right for SUPPORT
- A good opportunity to coach support - as the player on the ball should have 3 passing options - a forward option and an option on their left and right
- Is the first attacker getting her head up and looking to penetrate at the earliest opportunity?

Last Player in Defends
Players: 5
Objectives: To develop proper angles of support among attacking players and to improve passing skills and decision-making ability under gamelike pressures.
Setup: Use markers to create two 12x12 square grids spaced approximately 10 yard apart. Place 3 or 4 balls outside of each square. Designate 4 players as attackers and 1 as a defender. Three attackers and the defender begin in square 1. The remaining attacker (target) starts in square 2.
Procedure: The attackers in square 1 attempt to keep the ball from the defender. Attackers must complete at least 4 consecutive passes within the square before passing the ball to the player (target) in square 2. The 3 attackers then sprint into square 2 to support their teammate there. The last player in square 2 becomes the defender in that square; the others combine to play 3v1 against the defender. The original defender remains in square 1 as the target player for the next round. Play is continuous as players move back and forth from one square to the other.
