Description

The attacking team will be coached and the defending team will be managed by assistant coach during session,  the session will look at the attacking influence in the final third.

SET UP/ORGANISATION (5 mins)

Set up

  • Pitch size 40x30
  • 2x small goals in zone 1 & 1 normal size goal in zone 2
  • 6x Attackers (red) 6x defenders (blue) + GK
  • Balls will be on halfway line with the coach.

Organisation:

Attackers (red) will position themselves on the sidelines of Zone 1 and defenders (blue) will position themselves in zone 2.

The coach will be on the halfway line to feed the attackers the ball.

START (10 mins)

Welsh way principles

  • Understand when and how to combine,create and finish in the attacking third of the pitch.

Key Factors

  • The coach will feed the ball into an attacking player.
  • The attacking players will come out in pairs and the attack the defenders.
  • The defenders will become active and press the ball when the attackers pass the halfway line and enter zone 2.
  • The attacking players will look to attack the final third and create a goal scoring opportunity.
  • When/if the defenders win the ball from attackers they can transition into attack and score in the mini goal in zone 1.
Coaching points

  • The coach will coach the attackers who are running at defenders about their execution and passing when creating goal scoring opportunities.
  • Timing of runs.
  • Movement off the ball.
  • Recognise space and exploit opportunities.

  • Attackers of the ball must look to create good angles and passing lines when off the ball.

Conditions/ Challenges/ Targets 

  • Attacking team will score 1 point if they score a goal.
  • Attacking team will score 2 points if they score with a first time finish.
  • Defending team will score 1 point if they win possession and score in mini goals.

PROGRESSION (10 mins)

Progression

  • The attacking players will now look to create a 3v2 overload in the final third.
  • Attacking players will now have a 10 second time limit to get a shot at goal.

Key Coaching points

  • Create good passing lines and passing angles.
  • Attack defenders and space at pace and create a shot or goal scoring opportunity.
  • Make use of the extra player (overload).
  • Defenders to transition into attack quickly and score in mini goals. 
  • Defenders to press aggressively to close down the space for the attackers.

  • Attacking team will score 1 point if they score a goal
  • Attacking team will score 2 points if they score with a 1st time finish.
  • Defending team will score 3 points if they win possession and score in mini goals.

Organisation/set up

  • Pitch size 40x30

  • Red team to set up in a 1-3-1-3-1 formation and the blue team set up in a 1-3-1-1-3 formation.
  • Balls will be on halfway line with the coach who will dictate which team starts in a attacking phase of play.

SSG (15 mins)

Welsh way principles

  • Understand when and how to combine,create and finish in the attacking third of the pitch.

Organisation/set up

  • Play will start from one of the defenders who will then look to get the ball directly into to the attacking final third and create a goal scoring opportunity.
  • If the defending team win the ball back there will be a quick transition into attack who then will create a goal scoring opportunity. 

KEY COACHING POINTS

  • The coach will focus on that final pass and clinical finishing by attacking players, looking to hit the corners and work goalkeepers at every opportunity .
  • Movement off the ball to lose defenders and create options for other attackers.
  • Passing angles and passing lines to be created off the ball.

Conditions/ Challenges/ Targets

  • Any team will score 1 point if they score a goal
  • Any team will score 2 points if they score with a 1st time finish.
  • Any team will score 2 points if they win the ball back and score within 6 seconds of winning back possession.

SSG P1 (15 mins)

Organisation

  • The Attacking team (reds)will now look to play the ball in to the CDM (6) during the transition from defending to attack if the attacking team link up with with the CDM(6) In the middle zone and score there will be extra points awarded.

  • Understand when and how to combine,create and finish in the attacking third of the pitch.

Conditions/ Challenges/ Targets

  • Any team will score 1 point if the score a goal
  • Any team will score 2 points if they score with a 1st time finish.
  • Any team will score 2 points if they win possession back and score within 6 seconds.
  • If either team link up with their number 6 and score they will score 3 points.
