Warm Up Activities

Warm Up Activities:

Activity 1 (5 mins) - Foot Tennis. Play in small area to keep the touch close to the body and return by playing over the net. The ball cannot bounce and must be kept in the air. To progress - coach may call a number, for example "2", if the coach calls that number the player must try to have 2 touches of the ball before returning it over the net.

Activity 2 (5 mins) - Shot Stopping. Player is facing outwards towards the sideline. When coach calls "go" the GK reacts and makes a save from close range. Repeat and switch sides.

Activity 3 (5 repititions on each side) - Footwork and Reactions. GK moves through the cones and coach calls a colour (either yellow or blue) and GK must react for a save.

Activity 4 (5 mins) - Reactions, Shot Stopping, Movement. GK starts in central area. Coach feeds the ball into the GK's hands. Coach calls a colour (white or blue) and GK must react and make a save at that cone. If coach calls "yellow" the GK drops deep for a high ball to come up and catch at the highest point.

Activity 1

Activity 1 - Quick Reactions (Static):

1 minute of work. Coach continously shoots balls at the GK who has to try and save with their feet or arms and prevent the ball going through the poles. Coach can shoot directly at GK, try to bounce the ball at speed for GK to read the flight of the ball and also add a cone infront of the goalkeeper for the ball to bounce off to test the GK's quick reactions.

Progressions: Change Starting Position / Distance from feeder to GK.

Activity 2

Activity 2 - Reaction Saves:

In this activity the GK starts on the center of the 6-yard box. The coach will call either blue or yellow, the GK must react and make a save at that cone. The GK must recover quickly and make a quick save at the opposite cone. For example, if the coach calls 'blue' the GK must make a quick diving save at the blue cone, recover quickly and make a diving save at the yellow cone.

Progression(s): GK starts with his back to the coach, when coach calls a colour they turn quickly and react to make a save at that cone. A second progression could be if coach calls one colour the GK reacts by touching that cone and making a save at the opposition cone - recovering and making a save at the original cone.

Activity 3

Activity 3 - Footwork and Diving Techniques:

1). GK starts on the outside of the goalpost. When the coach calls 'go' the GK spins and steps over the cones and jumps over the hurdle into a diving save on the opposite side of the goal. 2). The GK then recovers quickly and makes a save at close range at the near post.

Play 5 times on 1 side then switch sides (i.e left to right into right to left).

Coaching Points:

Speed and Agility (Covering ground to get across goal quickly)

Reflexes (Making a diving save)

Recovery to Set Position (Recovering after the 1st save and quickly setting feet and body ready for next shot)

Activity 4 - Body Shape, Footwork and Diving Technique:

The GK starts online with the goalpost. The coach calls 'go' and the GK slides across the 6-yard box, jumping over the hurdle and getting around the blue cone quickly to recover and make a low diving save.

Progression: GK recovers quickly and faces a close range shot from the coach

Coaching Points:

Speed and Agility (Covering ground and recovering quickly)

Closing down the space at attacker's feet

Recovering and Setting Position (Hands, feet, hips)

Saving (Getting down early to make a save)

Activity 5 - Diving Technique & Shot Stopping:

GK begins by running quickly off the goalline. As the GK reaches the markers the coach will play a ball left or right to the GK who has to react and make a quick diving save.

Progression: After the first save, if the GK saves on the left side he has to recover quickly and slide quickly to the right side to make a recovery save at the other marker.
