PRINCIPLES OF PLAY
• ‘Shift and shoot’
• Shot selection
• Use of body
GENERIC SMALL-SIDED GAMES
• Small-sided games that give players the opportunity to practice shooting and finishing in a random, match-like environment.
COACHING DETAIL
SHOT SELECTION
• As with any game situation, there are many variables that can effect the players’ decision-making process.
• Praise good decisions: the type of shot attempted, where it’s taken from, how the opportunity was created.
• Consider how the conditions you implement on the games will affect the type of shots players go for. e.g. lace shot = 1 point, volley = 5 points; you are likely to see players try to create volley opportunities.
COACHES’ RECOGNITION
• Focus the majority of your praise on shooting and finishing. Encourage players to be imaginative and to get shots off quickly. Defensive duties may be neglected at times because the priority is to try and score, so accept that the game may be very open. This is no bad thing considering the session topic and aims.
• Be conscious that you want players to be able to express themselves, and younger players can be very creative.
• Be aware of the impact your negative or positive messages could have on whether the players try new things out in the future.

SSG shooting 4v4 (20 mins)
PRACTICE
• Play small-sided games with ‘normal’ football rules.
• Make the pitch small so there is less distance to travel to goal, thus producing lots of shooting opportunities.
• Play up to 4v4 (plus goalkeepers), and consider changing the point-scoring conditions to reward different types of shots: laces, side foots, first-time shots, ‘shift and shoot’ in 1v1s etc.
• Play short games (maximum 4 mins) to ensure high intensity throughout.
Progression
after each shot or loss of possession the player who was responsible must run around one of the corner flags of the goal they are shooting against quickly and make it back to help defend before the opposing team creates or scores a goal.
