Building play and breaking lines - Specific to SSG

See the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Football/Soccer images.
Topic- Breaking lines in possession
Understand when and how to play through, around or over the
opposition based on the type of pressure applied
Organisation and Set up
Half pitch set up with the goal and goalkeeper playing for the red team (coached) in a 4-3-3 single pivot, without any forwards, with 3 gates set up on the half way line.
The opposition blues will set up with a double pivot 4-2-3-1 without a back four.
The gates represent breaking the lines and playing through into that attacking player breaking the blue midfield line
Explanation
Coaching the red team and managing the blues, formation preset above. The red team with have a goalkeeper creating an overload and hopefully high levels of success.
The goal keeper will start each play with a goalkick the objective is for the back four to play in to the midfield and then through the gate, the gates represent the attacking players in the 1-4-3-3
The blues will be able to counter when they have the ball
.
Conditions
When blues win the ball they have a 20 second time limit to score
If blues take the ball off a red defender and score it’s worth two goals when play goes out it will restart with the goalkeeper or the coach depending on how the coach communicates.
Coaching Points
- In Posession:
make the area wide, utilise extra player to create overloads in key positions.
Move the ball quickly, this will move the opposition and create space, its important to move in to position after playing the pass to create more options to play though.
Mix up the way of playing through around or over opposition, how are the players positioning themselves to create opportunities to change the play.
-Out of Possesion
Recover into shape quickly
Keep areas tight so space cant be exploited
Specific tactical information
- creating the third man to invite press and create space to play through
- fullbacks must get high to support the middle
Specific Technical
- open body to play forward facing
-Move the ball quickly

Topic- Breaking lines in possession
Understand when and how to play through, around or over the
opposition based on the type of pressure applied
Organisation and set up
Similar to specific practice however we play the full width of the pitch with a taper, the taper supports the No 9 who will have no conventional wingers
Both teams are set up in a 1-4-3-3 with a single pivot, both teams have there wingers taken out. This will encourage the fullbacks to get forward in transition to help break lines.
Explanation
This game is free play 9v9, however the blues will be coached the reds will be managed
Conditions (optional)
- When Reds win possession they will have 15 seconds to score each second taking a point off the value of the goal 1 second being 15 goals 5 seconds being 10 etc once the time is out they can still keep possession however the goal will be a value of 1
- Potential to keep the thirds from the previous practice, if blues play a backwards pass in the same third they lose possession
- Blues can be rewarded up to three goals depending on how the coach perceived the goal to have broken the lines of the opposition and how effective
Key Points
Coaching points in the first practice can be advanced
- How can the fullbacks support the striker an create options to break the lines at a high point on the field
- when playing out from the back how does the goalkeeper distribute the ball with the intent of playing up the field
- how does the team set the shape to break lines, where is the player movement to receive the pass, in a technical sense how is the player receiving the ball to encourage positive forward play
-if the team plays back why have we played backwards and how does it create space more options

opposition based on the type of pressure applied
Organisation and Set up
Each goal is put on the edge of the 18 yard box, cones running parallel from the edge of each 18 to the other separated in to three equal thirds.
Each team set up in a 1-4-3-3 minus fullbacks and wingers to reduce to 7 players each team.
One player will be a ‘special player, playing for each team in possession
Explanation
Coaching the blue team and managing the red team
The idea is to play through the thirds with players only allowed to play in their designated thirds
The green player will have the exception of being able to move in to each third to help support the team in possession and especially in the middle third create and overload
Each time the ball goes out of play the keeper of the possession team will restart the game
Both teams are set up in a 1-4-3-3 with fullbacks and wingers taken out of the game. With the defensive overload however it allows the freedom for the CB to split and create width when playing out at the beginning.
Conditions
Goals are doubled if the ball progresses forward through the thirds without going back a third.
Goals tripled if opposition are played over straight through to the number 9
If goal is scored from a regain of possession within 8 seconds goal is doubled.
