Technical Practice

Organization:

Set Up as shown.

Instructions:

1. Playing around pressure through the opposite side: The ball starts with GK who plays out to one of the CBs, CB must look to receive the ball in a side on position and play back quickly to the GK on two touch. When the GK receives the ball back from the CB, the GK now looks to play through other CB that is patiently waiting to receive the ball. The CB with the ball now looks up to play out through the wide midfielder. Wide midfielder looks to check out and check back in to create space while the ball is travelling to the CB and looks to receive side on on the back foot and play forward to the FW. Once the ball is travelling towards the wide midfielder, the CF checks into the space in wide area to receive the ball and dribble through the gate. Once the ball gets past the build up line CBs get back into a compact shape and squeeze up to the build up line, DM squeeze up as well towards the halfway line while wide midfielders push up to provide support for the FW on the ball.

2. Playing through pressure: In this scenario, the GK passess the ball to the either CBs, when he receives the return pass, the GK passes to the opposite wide midfielder skipping out the other CB. Another option in this scenario is for the GK to play short to the DM and the DM looks to play into either wide midfielders.

3. Playing over pressure: In this scenario, GK and CBs are looking to bye pass the 3 midfielders and are playing long pass into the CF in the wide channel. While the ball is travelling in the air towards the CF, the whole team squeezes up beyond the build up line and the the 3 midfielders provide support for the CF.

Notes:

Once the play is over i.e. when the CF dribble through the gate, three new players swap with the two wide midfielders and the CF to start the next play. GK and CBs are only swap on coach's call to allow them to have a certain amount of repitition. Also coach switches players positions to give everyone a chance to play in different positions.

Coaching Points:

1. Movement - Players should use inventive movement to create space and move off the cones to replicate playing out of the back and pass the ball forward.

2. Timing - To receive the ball and replicate game realism, players should look to time their runs to receive the ball by not moving too early nor too late.

3. Quick combination play - Players should look to combine quickly taking two or three touches to play out from the back.

4. GK should serve the ball to CB back foot and provide support underneath.

5. GK should also look to receive the ball on back foot and play out through the other foot when switching play.

Progression:

1. CB passes back to the GK, the GK now picks out one of the three choices available in the middle third.

Skill Practice

Organization:

Setup 6v4 as shown.

Instructions:

- The players are divided into two teams at the start of the activity i.e. blue team (6) players including goalie and red team (4) players.

- Before the start of the skill practice, the attacking team (blue players) would be given cones to put down on the pitch to show the coach their starting positions when playing out from the back. This will help the players to have a clear picture of where they need to be when looking to play out from the back.

- Attacking team (blues) are looking to play out from the back to score in any of the three gates/counter goals either by dribbling through or passing the ball through while the reds are the defending team looking to press aggressively to win possession and score on the large goal.

- Activity start with the blue GK playing out from the back on a goal kick or from an under arm throw to one of the CBs, as soon as the ball is being thrown or kicked by the GK the red team applies full pressure on the ball and look to disrupt the build up play.

- If the reds wins possession of the ball inside the attacking third and score, it will count for two goals.

- Attacking team (Blues) set up in 1-2-3 formation Defending team (Reds) 4 defenders set up in a 0-1-3.

Coaching Points:

1. Goalkeeper safe and secure in possession - Before playing out of the back, the goalkeeper needs to have the ball safely and securely in their hands and is aware of options ahead of them.

2. Team shape - The attacking team (blues) should be set and ready with the Centre Backs splitting, RM and LM stay high and wide on the build up line and DM is looking to get on the ball whenever necessary.

3. Decision making - When playing out of the back, attackers need to make decisions before passing to retain possession, waiting for an opportunity to present itself or pass forward to break defensive lines

Progression:

1. Long pass restart. The coach plays a long pass to the blue GK from half way line, as the ball is travelling towards the GK, the blue players retreats and gets closer to the GK to ensure that ball is secured. As soon as the ball is fully secured by the GK, the blue team spread out and move quickly into the right positions and look to play out from the back.
