Warm up (5 mins)

Organization:

- Break players into pairs

- Each pair with a soccer ball

Activity:

-Passive Defending

-Players to dribble ball to one side of the field

-Defensive player to "jockey" passively

-Players to switch at end

- Each player to go 3 times

Coaching Points:

-Eye on the ball at all times

- Weight on back foot

- Touch Distance

- Knees bent/good balance

SSG - 3 v 3 and 2 v 2 (15 mins)

Organization:

- Break Pine Glen field into 4 smaller fields

- Break players into teams of 3 players

- 3 v 3 or 2 v 2 depending on the numbers

Activity

- 3v3 game with the players encouraged to defend as a team.

- Players press to advantage of a bad first touch

- If player has back to goal ensure that they cant get out or force them to play back.

Coaching Points

- Communication - Initial Pressing player needs to communicate "I'VE GOT BALL".

- Focus on shape - Defend as a team - Ensure always goal side

- Reset shape if player passes ball and there is a new pressing player.

- Ensure you're making recovery runs to support defensive shape

2 v 2; 3 v 2 (20 mins)

Organization

-See diagram for equipment and set-up

-Start with 2 v 2 and progress to 3 v 2. Diagram shows a 3 v 2 scenario

Activity

- Coach to pass ball to one of the attacking players.

- As coach is making the pass the attacking players are to open up and create space

- Defenders can start moving as ball is travelling to the net.

- Attacking player to try and score on big net.

- If defenders win ball they can score on either small net

- Ensure you are rotating players through offense and defense.

-Coaching Points

- Defending players to communicate to each other as to "has ball" and who has "support".

- Force player to outside to take angle way from shot- Show player outside and dont let them come inside.

- If attacking players pass the ball; players to switch roles where one presses ball and other player provides support.

Progression:

- Switch to 3 v 2

SSG (15 mins)

SSG 6 v 6 (15 mins)

Set up

- Break Pine Glen field into 2 small fields

- Break players into teams of 6 players

- One small net on each side

- Create 3 channels by laying down cones across the field as displayed. Do not put as many cones so it doesnt interfere with the ball.

Activity

- Players will play a standard 6v6 game.

- The defending team will only defend two channels if the ball goes out wide (i.e. to the outside channel).

- If attacking team has the ball in channel 1. The defending team will only defend channels 1 and 2.

Coaching Points

- Press the player with the ball

- Stay goal side at all times

- Wide players tuck in to provide support

Progression

- Remove channels and hopefully players will continue defending channels.
