Set Up

Session Topic:

Build up play in central areas in a 3-4-1-2

Set Up:

Half Pitch Practice into 11 v 11.

Organisation

Coaching Team - 3-4-1-2 (Yellow)

Opposition Team - 1-4-4-2 (Reds)

HPP into 11 v 11 working on patterns on how to get the Number 10 on the ball as often as possible and utilise the space between the midfield and defensive units of the opposition creating a 3v2 overload in central areas.

Need to encourage coaching team of attacking centrally given the opposition will have the overload in wide areas. Our '10' is essential.

If the patterns are defended by the opposition, then we need to work on solutions (What If's).

Will condition the opposition to press the coaching team to begin with as they're 1-0 down and are facing relegation so need a point away from home to stay up.

Need to progress this later on in the session where the opposition have now scored and are holding on to the 1-1 they require so no need to go and press so will play mid to low block.

Will put cones on either side of the coaching team's attacking third as markers for when the ball goes dead, the opposition have to get up to that line to ensure reasim throughout.

If defensive team pinch the ball, then they have 8 seconds to attack and be as direct as possible to I can get the coaching team on the ball as much as possible.

Football/Soccer Session Plan Drill (Colour): Pattern 1

Pattern 1

Need to remind opposition to press high and to show us outside as that's where their overload on us is.

Pattern 1

- Build up play along back line. Has to be quick and sharp so that we don't gove the opposition strikers any chance of pinching the ball making us vulnerable at the back.

- Trigger for this pattern is for the Left Side Center Back to take two steps forwards (as shown on the diagram) as he knows his ball side midfielder will make that run forward to create a box to play in.

- Once the Left Side CB receives the ball, that's the trigger for the ball side Midfielder whom begins on the inside shoulder, to run accross the outside shoulder, causing panic in his marker. Should his marker track him or even lose concentration, then that should allow the gap in central areas to appear.

- Opposite midfielder then to check his run to get on the ball. Coach receiving with the back foot.

- Important that our '10' starts high and drops in late. Timing of this movement is crucial.

- Left Side Midfielder then passess the ball into the '10's feet who receives on the half turn

- Ensure that the two CF's pin the opposition CB's.

- Important to coach the end product whereas two CF's are looking for the slide rule pass, '10' to try and commit one of the CB's before giving the pass through.

- Left Wing Back to come in off the line.

- Right wing back to give depth and balance

- Angles and distances between the two DLM's moving forward is important.

What If's

1. What if the opposition CF blocks the passing lane from our Left Side CB into ball side midfielder?

Solution: Then we will look to play the ball directly from the Left Side CB into the '10'

2. What if the opposition midfield 4 play narrow to stop us playing through the lines?

Solution: Then we can play it into the wing back, '10' drops in to effect the two opposition screeners, and once the wing back receives, the '10' breaks into the hole between opposition midfield and defensive units.

3. What if one of the opposition screeners drop in to mark our '10' and their striker drops in to mark one of our midfielders?

Solution: Then our CB needs to step in and entice opposition midfielder. If their midfielder encroaches then we can play wall passess centrally as we will have the 4v3 overload which will be CB in possession, the two midfielders and the '10' against opposition striker (who has dropped in), and their two midfielders.

If this scenario happens then important to remind the opposition that they're 1-0 down and need to win the ball back.

Pattern 2

Pattern 2

Now the opposition wingers are getting higher and higher not allowing our Left Side CB or Right CB room to play. This resuts in us having to transfer the ball back centrally to our CB. If we can't develop pattern from outside to in, then we will play through the lines centrally.

The trigger for this pattern is the Right Side CB taking two steps backwards giving depth as he knows he's being pressed and his body positioning tells you that he's about to pass the ball straight back because of the pressure.

- As play is being developed accross back 3, CB passess ball to Right Side CB.

- Because of the in-coming pressure the RS CB takes two steps back to give depth, and then passes ball back to our CB.

- Once the ball is travelling, then our Right Side (ball side) midfielder does the same movement as in the previous pattern which is starts on the inside shoulder of his marker then runs off his outside shoulder to ensure he has nfluenced him enough to be tracked.

- Our Left Side Midfielder then checks to create that two yards he needs to play through lines by giving depth.

- '10' again starts high and drops in at an angle

- Ball is played into him where he receives on the half turn. Essential to coach the end product.

- Two strikers to pin the CB's until one of the engages, then the '10' plays the slide rule pass,

- Ensure defensive balance is coached also.

What if's:

1. What if our ball playing midfielder checks however his marker reads it and it's too tight for him to play the ball into him?

Solution: Then the CB plays directly into the '10's feet.

2. What If the opposition midfielder doesn't track ours who makes the run accross his outside shoulder to create space?

Solution: Then our CB steps into the hole to entice midfielder to close, then we play into the '10' who adapts his angles which then gives us a 4v3.

Pattern 3 - 11v11

Pattern 3

The opposition have now got their goal so I will condition them to sit in a mid to low block.

- Play is developed accross backline. Left Side CB gets on the ball.

Trigger for this pattern is where the Ball Side Midfielder entices his marker with his movement and drops in at an angle.

- Once Midfielder get's on the ball then important the '10' drops in between opposition screeners to influence the two and give them a problem.

- Midfielder then passes it into the winger who comes in off the line, and receives the ball side on with his stronger foot.

- This is the trigger for the '10' to break the line into the space between the opposition midfield and defensive units and receives the ball from the winger.

- Again coach the end product where both CF's pin their CB's and by stepping backwards to create the gap. Once the space opens up then the slide rule is on as it's 3v2 centrally.

- One of the wing back's can join in at an angle, and also one of the midfielders can engage however ensure that the defensive balance is correct and managed.

What If's

1. What if opposition remain narrow?

Solution: Then we can instruct the winger not to come inside, instead hugging the touchline, but we still develop the same pattern. Ensure that when the '10' breaks the line, he does it at an angle to minimise the passing distance.

2. What if we're struggling to break the lines in wide areas?

Solution: Then can we play it into the '10' who flicks it round the corner to our '9'

Ensure pattern 1 and 2 come out in the 11 v 11 as well as pattern 3.

Remember to allow it to flow and be realistic. If it goes out for a goal kick to the oppsition, allow it to be that etc.
