The purpose of this session is to help build better combination play leading to better rhythm while in possession. Need to keep 3-5 minute intervals to keep energy high, and movement sharp. Add 10 minutes of races at the beginning after warm ups to ensure legs are tired before beginning tactical training. Also add 30 minute game at the end of the tactical small sided training

Organization: mark out a 40 x 30 yard field, divide players into 3 teams of 6 players. Progression 1 -Each team has a ball, Progression 2 - only 1 ball on the field.
Instructions: Each team start passing combinations with 1 touch play, then after the combination is completed a player may dribble the ball 2 times before setting up the combination again with the next set of players. Progression 1 - See which team connects the most amount of 1 touch passes after 3 minutes. Progression 2 - Red team becomes bumpers on the outside of the grid while other teams play keep away. Every 6 .

Organization: Teams are broken up into groups of 8 (have the rest be neutral players to help the flow of possession. As things progress use less neutrals, and more even numbers). From previous exercise goalkeepers are taken out of groups and put in goal, and attacking mids are taken out and used as neutral players. Three zones (30 x 40) are set with 2 goals at each of the endlines of the outside zones.
Instructions: teams must complete 5 passes before attempting a through ball into the next zone where the teams must connect another 5 passes before attempting a through ball into the attacking zone. Once the team connects 5 passes in the attacking zone attackers will play a through ball beyond the endline to a teammate running over to score a point. Phase 1 - once in the attacking zone teams can score after connecting 5 passes. Phase 2 - in addition to teams connecting 5 passes before scoring, teams must also complete 1 switch of play before attempting a through ball. Phase 3 (Addition of goals) Teams must complete 1 switch of play before attempting a shot on goal, and must score from a 1st touch shot.
Coaching Points: Finding the combination from the previous exercises. Linking pass strings through the thirds.

combination pattern to mini goals (15 mins)
Organization: 2 mini goals about 20 yards apart. Place two starting cones between them (8 yards from the goals) and two more cones in front of each starting cone at 10 yard intervals.
Instructions: Follow the number pattern passing pattern. Once completed on one side, move on to the next.
Coaching Points: heal down, toe up, locked ankle, head down to complete the technique. Need to demand proper weight of pass through the middle of the combination, and keep rhythm to the last pass of the play.
