Positional Rondos Progression (20 mins)
Practice Objective
To help players prevent being drawn into the ball, maintaining our offensive shape as possession circulates.
Area Sizes
With positions being slightly more accurate increase each rondo size to around 20x25m.
Session Explanation
The practice is of the same premise as the latter however now instead of their being three rondos and three balls, one ball is removed leaving one rondo inactive. The players positioning will now be more accurate therefore the rondos will be bigger. The aim for the active rondos is to ensure all players touch the ball once before passing on towards the inactive rondo, scoring one point each time. This creates the feeling of possession being circulated in a game and challenges players to remain disciplined with regards to their positioning. If a defender wins possession they can attack any of the three mini goals, if the reds manage to win possession back before the whites can score they must try regain their shape and start again.
Conditions & Challenges
- 1/2 Touch
- A progression could be the closest player operating within the inactive rondo can move and aid ball progression, e.g. rondo 2 and 3 are active, to aid them the CDM from rondo 1 can get involved. *
- Reduce to one ball only, leaving two rondos inactive, challenging their positional discipline.
Coaching Detail
- Use the space to stretch the opposition.
- Constant scanning to be aware of which rondo is inactive.
- * For the progression, look to encourage players to keep their positioning in mind when helping other rondos, keep it realistic, the CDM for example mustn't surrender the centre of the pitch entirely, as it would leave us venerable to a counter and disorganised our shape.

Positional SSG (25 mins)
Practice Objectives
Placing players in a more games based environment, seeing if coaching points from previous practices have been effective. Look to see if players are using the space available and thinking about their positioning.
Area Size
51x 45m.
Session Explanation
The session now moves into SSG formats. Teams attacking (Red team left side, white team right side in the picture) will have a tighter space to operate within. This is to encourage wide players to get high up the pitch in possession and understand their offensive positioning. To enter this area players can only dribble in or if their team is out of possession and defending. If the attacking team scores, another ball will be played in and the attack will resume, if the defending team wins possession and scores, the teams switch sides.
The central players in black will help provide outlets and overloads to the team in possession. First team to score six goals (Across both pitches) will stay on and the other team will switch out with black.
Challenges & Conditions
- If the practice is too easy the players in black behind the goals will help the defending sides.
- Limit time on the ball to 2-3 seconds, encouraging scanning and quick decision making.
- Progress the session onto a 9v9 game, one team in an offensive shape, the other in a defensive shape, analyse players positional understanding and execution.
Coaching Detail
- Look to show players 'channels', e.g. one in a wide area, one centrally and one in the half space, challenge players to scan to see their teammates position.
- The closer to goal we get the faster the ball has to move, defences get tighter with each progression.
- Look to keep width and depth within offensive structures.
- Encourage players to dribble in to the 'dribble only' area as they may draw out a defender looking to press them, creating space in behind.

Positional Rondos (15 mins)
Practice Objective
To paint game realistic pictures for the players allowing them to see possible combinations and typical player positioning whilst also getting them comfortable retaining possession in offensive positions.
Area Sizes
Each rondo look to set out an area of 15x20m.
Session Explanation
Layout a series of rondos using your teams formation, look to organise their positioning when in possession and in the opposing half but on a smaller scale. Using our 4-4-2 diamond, the three rondos created are, GK, two CBs and DM, and two mirroring rondos using a wide midfielder, striker and wingback each, with the CAM operating for both through the centre. The aim for the reds is to retain possession for as long as they can tallying up their pass count. If the whites win possession they swap out with the player who conceded possession and play resumes. CAM will be involved with both rondos, therefore must be frequently scanning and turning to ensure success.
