Soccer Tennis: Pressure and Cover
Set-Up: Field is 40yds x 30yds, with 4 equal zones. Balls
located centrally off to the side with the Coach. 2 teams of 7 in
two banks of 3 with a target players.
Instructions: The coach plays a ball in to one team who attempt to pass the ball (two touch) within their designtated zone to create an opportunity to play the ball across to other grid or to the target player to score a point, The ball must be played below knee height except if the ball is played in the air from the far zone to the target player for 2 points (to complete the 2 points, there must be a first touch lay off to a teammate who has made a forward run to support the target player). The defending team defends by closing the distance and using angles, support and positioning to close the plassing lanes (including the ball over the top). One defender can enter the zone with the ball to pressure if the player chooses to do so (including back pressure). Play to a score (5-10).
Progression: Allow a second defender to enter the zone with the ball to create a double team (again, this includes using back pressure as an option).
Coaching Points: Stay switched on - When to step in to pressure the ball vs when to sit and use shape to close passing lanes. The recovery (retreat run) run when the ball gets passed off. The spacing of the cover/balance players. How to anticipate what is going to happen next and how to position oneself to be ready to move and deal with that pass. Body position and shape. Communication between the two banks and between the players within a zone. When and why to double team.

3 v 3 to 5 v 5 - 4 Goal Game: Defensive game management (20 mins)
Set-Up: Field is 30yds x 35yds to 50yds x 60yds, with 2 goals on each end line.
Balls located centrally off to the side with the Coach. 2 Equal
teams with no Goalkeepers.
Instructions: Teams play 3 v 3 and attempt to score in one of the
opponents goals. All re-starts are from a ball played in by the
coach. Rotate players through. Goals scored after winning the ball in the attacking half are worth double. Goals scored when the attack is initiated from any other part of the field are worth 1. Must be in the attacking half to score. Play with offsides. Play games to three and rotate the players.
Coaching Points: Stay switched on - immediate transition from
attacking to defending. When to press and when to get defensive shape. Communication with specific information. Body position and shape. Team shape depending on chosen defensive priorities. Be intelligently aggressive. Communication between all three defenders. Be aware of dangerous players vs dangerous space.

8 v 8 Game: Defending as a Team (20 mins)
Set-Up: Field is 70yds long x 50yds wide with a half-way line and 2 goals at either end. Two equal teams, with 2 GK's. Balls distributed beside goal to keep the game flowing when balls go out of play.
Instructions: Play 8 v 8 with offside in effect. Re-start from the GK when a goal is scored or ball goes out of play.
Coaching Points: Stay switched on - immediate transition from attacking to defending.
Pressing Tactics - closest player pressures ball and shows the attacker in one direction. Second defender looks to take away the attacker's easiest pass. The rest of the defenders push on to take away passing opportunities and look to intercept the ball.Communication amongst all players to make sure the group is committed to pressing together.
Dropping Tactics - players drop to half way and give the opposing team time and space in their own defensive half. The defensive team is compact from front to back and side to side making it diffictult for the attacking team to find penetrating passing opportunities. One and then two banks of three for the defensive team shape. Communication amongst all players to ensure that any passes into own half are pressured immediately or intercepted.
