Interesting tactical approach by Guardiola against Crystal Palace's well drilled 3-4-2-1.
Adopting a 5-4-1 in the defensive phase allowed for a degree of man-to-man when defending the counterattack, but moreover the structure in build up was clear and intentioned. Air-Nouri and Savinho held positions high and wide with Marmoush and Semenyo pinning centrally holding the back 5 in place. The roles of Gvardiol and Foden in the half space pockets preventing the opposition CB's from being proactive stepping into win the ball. Bernardo Silva at the base as press resistant metronomic player and Guéhi, Khusanov and Nunes in a back 3 able to soak up the out balls, maintain a high field tilt, execute a near perfect final third rest defence and circulate the ball when it came back out.
When palace played out from goal kicks an even more dynamic press emerged. Marmoush and Semenyo dropped blocking the passing lanes into central MF2 - just like against Arsenal. Air Nouri and Savinho orientated on the central 2 CB's, Gvardiol and Nunes ready to close on the flanks with Silva and Foden screening their two inside forwards ready to double up if diagonal passes found in half spaces with cover behind from shifting back defensive line.
