Aerial Ball Mastery #2 (15 mins)

Set Up: 5x5yd box. Players are partnered up with one player working for 60 seconds and one player resting/serving. In this example player 1 is working and player 2 is outside the box serving the ball in. The player outside the box throws the ball (underarm) to the player in the box. They must control the ball in the box, using the following body parts, and pass it back on the ground to the server. 

Progressions:

:: Throwing player can bounce the ball in

Coaching Points:

:: Get your body behind the ball

:: Keep your eyes on the ball

:: Stay light on your feet so you can adjust your body quickly

:: Try to get the ball on the ground as quickly as possible before passing back

:: If volleying the ball back - make sure your knee is above the ball

2v2 Aerial Balls (15 mins)

Set Up: 20x12 grid (adjust size depending on age). A small net on each end. 2v2 (1v1 if needed) game with normal rules. Coach throws the ball (underarm or bounced) to a pair who must get it under control and attack the other teams net. Make it a competition!

Sessions Aims: To create lots of opportunities to receive an aerial ball

Coaching Points:

:: Get your body behind the ball

:: Keep your eyes on the ball

:: Stay light on your feet so you can adjust your body quickly

:: Try to get the ball on the ground as quickly as possible before passing back

:: If volleying the ball back - make sure your knee is above the ball

Set Up: 3v3/4v4 plus targets. Each team is aiming to get the ball from one target to the other (yellows) without losing the ball for a point. When a target receives the ball they must pick it up and throw it (underarm) to the same team that they received it from

Session Aims: To create opportunities to receive an aerial ball within a game situation

:: 3v3/6v6.

:: 20x30 - 30x40 pitch.

Conditions:

:: Every time the ball goes out its a throw (normal throw, underarm throw or bouncing the ball in is okay)

:: Try to get the ball on the ground as quickly as possible to attack

:: If volleying the ball - make sure your knee is above the ball
