Conditioning/ Triangle overlaps (10 mins)

The goal of this drill is to start to get bending runs in the minds of the players while also conditioning/warming them up. Players will go around a marked Square doing overlapping runs as they make their way completely around the marked square. The groups will be in pairs of three. Once a player passes the ball to the player closest to them they will do an overlapping run to make themselves available for a pass.

The dimensions of this drill can be as big or as small as you want. I typically use the field for my square. The reason I did not show that in the example is because it would not be big enough on the outside of the field for me to show it in the sport session planner.

Finishing using bending runs and runs trigger runs. (25 mins)

While it may look like the focus of the drill is finishing, the main focus is how the players get the ball up to finish. Players will use four different variations of runs including overlaps and underlaps to really focus the concepts of bending runs and runs trigger runs.

To start the coach will play the ball to one of the four players inside the Square. Their job is to get four passes before they even pass it out to the correct player. The two blue players are too defensive players, if they win the ball their goal is to score in one of the two small goals located next to the coach.

All three Variations:

  • Once all four passes have been completed inside the box players will look to either pass to the two or three (depending on what side the ball is played to). From there the two or three will pass to the nine. The nine will look to play the ball inside the red zone to either the seven or eleven (depending on what side the ball is played to). The seven or eleven will cross the ball in front of the goal with either the 9, 10, 7 or 11 finishing.

  • Once all four passes have been completed inside the box players will look to either pass to the seven or eleven (depending on which side the ball is play to). From there the seven or eleven will play to either the two or the three (depending on which side the ball is play to). The nine will now move into the red area to receive a pass and cross it in front of the goal. The 2 or 3, 10, and 7 or 11 should finish the ball.

  • Once all four passes have been completed inside the box players will work to pass to either the seven or eleven (depending on which side the ball is play to). From there the seven or eleven will play to the two or the three (depending on which side the ball is play to). The two or the three will cross the ball in front of that. The 9, 10, 7 or 11 will finish the ball.

All three variations of the drill are animated in sports the sports session planner

Small sided (20 mins)

For this one, you want to do a small-sided 6v6 game. The focus team is shaped in a 2-1-3 and the opponent’s team is in a 3-1-2. Typically do you want to focus on the principles that you just worked on in the last drill. This drill is almost identical except we have changed it to make it more game-like.

The picture for the drill looks slightly different than a scrimmage because I didn’t have two goalies for this. If you are like me and don’t have two goalies I would set it up the way that I did here. If you do have two goalies then I would take away the two small goals for the opposing team to score in and set up another goal on the green line at half for them to score in with a keeper.

Scrimmage or Game Like activity (20 mins)

For the end of practice, you can do a scrimmage based on the number of players you have or set up a gamelike scenario. This gamelike scenario is a staple for my practices and while I add small changes depending on the goal of the practice, it typically looks something like this.

The attacking team is put into a 3-3 or more if I have the players and the defense has the keeper and is set up into a 4-1. Both offense and defense teams are based on our 4-3-3 that we play on game day. The ball will start from the attacking team's 6 from here we let them play emphasizing the goals from earlier within the session. If the ball goes out the back, play from the keeper. The numbers are the positional numbers.

The goal of the attacking team is to use bending runs and the concept of runs trigger runs to try and score, just as I worked on earlier. We are now putting those principles into a game-like scenario. The defense of course is working together to defend the goal and play the ball out wide to open up the field for the attack. (Score in the small goals.) The reason I like this gamelike scenario over a small scrimmage is that it works on the players in their game day formation.
