Description

Technical ball based warm up, leading into a 6 v 6 + 6 possession game, progression to a 10 v 8 possession v pressure game, followed by a 9 v 9 game with the focus on maintaining possession and playing through the oppositions pressure

Overall Session Objective: To improve our ball retention whilst under pressure

Duration - 90 minutes

Number Of Players - 18

Equipment Needed - Balls, bibs, cones, goals

Warm Up (15 mins)

Warm Up

Duration - 16 minutes

Area needed - centre circle

Objective:  To prepare the players for a technical possession based session using relevant football actions and dynamic stretching

Method:

  • 2 x Goalkeepers work with GK coach to undertake GK specific warm up
  • Outfield players split into 2 teams of 8 - 6 players from each team spread around centre circle, 2 players from each team start inside with balls
  • Warm up starts with players passing to their teammates on the outside and following pass to take up outside player's position.
  • Outside player receiving the ball dribbles into centre circle and picking a pass to another outside teammate.

Coaching Points:

  • Progress players through different movements/football actions
  • Introduce dynamic stretching breaks
  • Increase tempo in stages
  • Finish warm up with high intensity, limited touches 2 v 2 + 6 possession bursts - 90 second rounds with active recovery

Possession only 6 v 6 + 6 (15 mins)

Drill 2: Possession only 6 v 6 + 6

Duration: 15 minutes

Area Needed: 40m x 30m

Objective: To improve ball retention in tight areas


Method:

  • 6 v 6 + 6 outside players
  • 6 outside players are with team in possession
  • 5 x 3 minute games

Orientation:

  • Rotate outside players into grid for each new game
  • Active recovery on the outside


Coaching Points:

  • Create angles to receive
  • Quick passing combinations
  • Use overloads

Progressions:
  • Limit touches to increase tempo
  • Award points when a set number of passes are completed

10 v 8 possession vs pressure (20 mins)

Game: 10 v 8 set up with focus on ball retention

Duration: 20 minutes 

Area Needed: One third of pitch

Objective: To improve our ball retention when under pressure

Method:

  • 10  v 8 match
  • Overload in favour of possession (Red) team, who have both GKs on their team
  • Red Team try to keep possession
  • Blue Team try to win ball and score in either goal

Orientation:

  • Game starts through GK each time
  • Blues stay behind line of engagement until first pass is played so control can be established within the drill


Coaching Points:

  • Move ball quickly
  • Create angles for passes
  • Make the pitch as big as possible
  • Use GK to switch direction of possession
  • Transition to defend when possession lost



Progressions:

  • Limit touches to increase tempo
  • Award points to possession team for completing a set number of passes
  • Change a player from the Blue Team into a neutral player, playing with whoever is in possession

9 v 9 match (20 mins)

Game: 9 v 9 match with focus on retaining possession

Duration:20 minutes 

Area Needed: Full width of pitch, length is from goal line to just over halfway line

Objective: To retain possession when under pressure



Method:

  • 9 v 9 match
  • 1-3-2-3 vs 1-3-2-3
  • Both teams look to retain possession and play through opposition pressure
  • Transition to defence when possession is lost

Orientation:

  • Key players in key positions - GK, DEF, MID, ATTACK
  • Both teams to implement high press when out of possession

Coaching Points:

  • Establish controlled possession when starting phases of play
  • Width and depth in possession
  • Opposite movements to create space
  • Can we play with limited touches?

Cool Down: Duration - 10 minutes

Session Review:
  • Did we make the pitch as big as possible?
  • Did we use the GK to help us maintain possession in defensive third?
  • Did we create space to receive in the middle third by using opposite movements and rotations?
  • Did we use quick combinations in the final third?
  • Did we successfully keep the ball and play through opposition's pressure?
