Skill Intro - 'Football Tennis' (15 mins)

Organisation:

Play this game with teams of 2 or 3 with cones in the middle of the playing area acting as the tennis net.

How to Play:

Start with the ball only being able to be played on the floor.

The ball is not allowed to be static at any time in the game, other than when it is being served.

On the coach's signal, the serving team kicks the ball along the ground to the other team who must take a maximum 2 touches for each player and have to play one pass before kicking the ball back to the other team.

A point is awarded if more than 2 touches are taken; if the ball comes to a complete stop; or if the ball crosses the end-line (not the side-line).

Coaching Tips:

Change teams according to skill levels and try to keep similar abilities playing against each other to make everyone is challenged.

Players can work on the technique of keeping their head and knee over the ball to make sure the ball doesn't rise above head height, but still strike with power.

CHANGEIT / Progressions:

You can finish off with a big game (5v5) and even try throwing in an extra ball to challenge further.

Depending on ability, you can also play with the ball in the air and allow for 2 or 3 bounces.

Skill Training - Rondo Small Sided Games (15 mins)

Organisation:

Depending on your group size, organise a couple of smaller games within your area and play either a 2v1, 3v2, 4v2, etc. with the bigger team always being the attacking team.

How to Play:

Aim of the game is for the team with more players to keep the ball away from the defending team with less players.

Attacking team must play a certain amount of passes before they can score in either of the goals. E.g. The attacking team must play 5 passes before they can score a goal.

Defending team has unlimited touches and can score in any goal whenever they win possession of the ball.

Coaching Tips:

Rotate the defenders frequently.

Implement a maximum touch rule, e.g. 2 or 3 touches for the attacking team so that you are encouraging them to take a good first touch.

Depending on where the opposition is, your first touch can be a stronger one into space away from the defender; or a softer touch so you can play a pass immediately.

Take the opportunity to highlight and celebrate good examples of movement, control, quick thinking, etc.

CHANGEIT / Progressions:

You can also give the defending team a time limit to score a goal, e.g. 10 seconds. This will encourage quick thinking to counter the opposition.

Skill Game - 4 Goal Football (20 mins)

Organisation:

In a roughly 30m x 20m pitch, place 2 goals on each of the long sides and play horizontally to allow for more space in wide areas.

How to Play:

Game as usual but with two goals to aim at rather than the one.

Coaching Tips:

Encourage players to scan by looking around the field and using the wide areas to move defenders around until there is a free space to score in one of the goals.

CHANGEIT / Progressions:

Include a 2 or 3 touch rule to encourage more passing and more first touches.
