Description

What: Protecting the ball

When: Whenever the player sees pressure and doesn't feel comfortable passing; instead of booting it up they can protect the ball and pass it to a teammate

Why: To further give them another tool to help them get forward, connect passes, and score

Where: Anywhere in the field of play

Introduction (5 mins)

Organization:

30x30 (Add as many players as needed)

Instructions:

2 players, 1 ball per pair
Players pass amongst themselves until coach calls out *Battle* then whoever doesn't have the ball has to get the ball from their teammate.
Player with ball tries to protect ball
Ball stays with original player 2 points, defender steals it 1 point.

Coaching Points/Questions:

Can we put our body in the way of the ball?
Can we protect the ball against the defender?

R: 2 Defenders

Main Activity (10 mins)

Organization:

Instructions:

Attackers dribble the ball around the square. Defenders try to steal the ball, after stolen they have to score on a goal. Switch after every time.

Coaching Points/Questions:

Can we not just kick it, but steal the ball and take a big touch towards a goal?
Can we keep possession of the ball by protecting the ball?

Regressions/Progressions:

R: More space; Add more goals
P: Players can't dribble only protect the ball
