Skill Focus - Flat Stick Tackle

In pairs, work through the technique and actions of a flat stick tackle.

COACHING POINTS (for defender):

  • Two hands on the stick. Hands apart in basic grip.
  • Left foot forward.
  • Low body position. Knees bent.
  • Stay on the balls of the feet to keep mobile - don't plant your feet.
  • Head up to see the attacker and time the tackle. Focus on the ball.
  • Stick is on the ground to ensure increased surface area to win the ball.
  • Stick is at right angles to the line theball is travelling in.

  • Use the whole of the stick to block the attacker’s path and win the ball.

The defending player should time the tackle so that it is made at thelast moment to catch the opponent off guard, looking for cues suchas such as:
  • When the attacking player takes their stick off the ball.
  • When the attacking player looks away from the ball.
  • When the attacking player is trying to move directly through the line ofthe defender.
The defending player should match up stick to stick with the attackingplayer moving the ball.
