Dealing with 1v1s

Key Factors / mechanics

  • Focus on start position
  • Angle / distance from ball
  • Assessment
  • Angle / speed of approach
  • Put onus on attacker
  • Move down the line when the ball is out of attackers feet
  • Decision - Secure - diving on the ball and keeping possession....OR - Blocking - unable to get close enough to dive on the ball before it is struck so aim to block shot....OR - Delaying - unable to dive on ball, and striker is delaying shot for 2nd player or to take around GK. Important to be front foot and alert when delaying as an opportunity to dive on the ball or block a shot may appear at any time.

Organisation

  • Attacker dribbles towards the goal to create a 1v1 with the GK
  • GK is looking to meet attacker and make either a block, win the ball or force the attacker wide of the coned area.
  • GK faces two rotations against both players then switches  places with other GK
  • Coaching position is initially behind the goal but will also be from the side edge of the 18yd box. Coaching feedback will be concurrent and utilise how and what questions as much as possible.
