Warm-up20 mins

Warm up

Players to lead their own physical warm ups. Squad split into two and squad appointed captains, take the warm up.

Drill

Set up

4 cones in a diamond, 10 paces from centre point.

Players evenly split themselves between the 4 cones and one player starts in middle.

Two balls required, starting with at two groups next to each other.

Drill movement;

First pass goes into centre players feet, who is to show at an angle and turn, playing a pass to the group behind him.

Original passer becomes middle man and receives pass from 2nd group, who repeats action.

First progression

Player in middle, rather than turning with the ball, lays it off instead. Original passer plays ball through to opposite side. Lay-off player follows pass and joins end of queue.

Players encourage to still show at an angle, taking care of weight of lay-off and pass.

Second progression

After laying off the ball in the middle, the player exiting the middle will play a 1-2 with the receiving player at the front of the opposite queue.

Third progression

A condition is introduced. Squad is given three 'lifelines'. For each mistake they make in a 2 minute spell, they lose a lifeline. Mistakes count as bad passes, poor control, no communication.

If they lose all lifelines before the 2 minute spell is up, they have to do a physical 'punishment'. Press-ups etc.

If they complete the 2 mins successfully, the lifelines get reduced.

Coaching points

Weight of passes, weight of lay-off, body shape and angle, checking shoulder, communication, quality under pressure

Drill 2

Set up

Channel, split into three zones. Large goal at one end with keeper, mini-goal at other end with no keeper.

Two defenders are assigned to the middle zone, one defender assigned to the end zone.

Group of balls next to mini-goals.

Drill movement

The three attacking players aim to score into the big goals. They can freely move throughout the thirds. The defensive players, whilst they are out of possesion, are restricted to their assigned zones.

If the attacking players score, they are to restart again, collecting a ball from next to the mini-goals.

If the defensive players win the ball, they are now free to leave their assigned zones and counter-attack into the mini-goals.

If they successfully score, they now become the attackers and can take a ball and restart immediately.

The previous attackers (now defenders) must quickly reogranise themselves into the zones accordingly.

Drill continues to run until no balls are left. At this point, give the players a break and gather the balls back in again.

Progressions

It is possible to introduce the counter attack as a progression. Starting instead that the defensive players are to simply clear the ball or maintain possession.

Drill 3

Set-up

Channel with two end zones.

4v4 in the middle, with a team of 4 in each end zone.

Collection of balls in end zones.

Drill movement

Team in possession attempt to dribble the ball into the end zone.

After successfully dribbling the ball (under control) into the end-zone, the team that has just conceded, come off and the team waiting in the end-zone can attack.

Drill continues at high tempo until balls need to be re-gathered.

Progression

It is possible to introduce the rotating teams as a progression. Inititally starting the drill as a 4v4 with the outside players feeding the ball in as a counter attack.

Conditioned game

Pitch split into three thirds.

For the attacking team, the first two thirds is limited to 2 touch. Final third is all in.

This encourages quick passing and build up play, options and angles whilst providing creative freedom to the attack minded players near the goal.
