Crosses - Basics (20 mins)

Start with a General crossing exercise

Equipment

Right sized goal for the age/ability of the keeper. Four cones on the edge of each side of the box as shown, each with 1 ball. GK starts in the goal

Session

GK starts in centre. Server 1 starts with ball at cone A in hand and throws ball to land in shaded area. GK to take high catch and return to S1. GK keeper turns to receive a throw from S2 at cone A. Servers move to cones B and repeat until completed 4 throws each. Rotate keepers. Once complete, swap keepers and servers

Progression

Once caught catch from S1, throws to S2 who moves to any cone so GK must make eye contact before through the ball.

Cross from ball off ground

Have second keeper stand in shaded area (not challenge) to provide distraction


Coaching points:

  • Starting position in relation to the ball
  • Body position - positive
  • Assess the flight of the ball (dont move too early)
  • Communication early, clear and concise
  • Attack the ball - Late, hard and fast - go the quickest and shortest route.
  • Take off inside inside leg
  • Take ball at highest point, elbows flexed watch the ball into the hands
  • Agility, balance coordination and speed
  • Decision making
  • Catching Technique
  • Problem solving

Crosses - game scenarios (20 mins)

Start with a General crossing exercise

Equipment

Right sized goal for the age/ability of the keeper. Four cones on the edge of each side of the box as shown, each with 1 ball. GK starts in the goal. One defender, two attackers

Session

GK starts in centre of goal. Server 1 starts outside of the box with the balls. Passes to server 2, who then dribbles ball to cone 'a' where he then crosses for Server 1 to try to score with a header.

GK must decide to come or stay. Communications with defenders in this session is vital.

Progression

Repeat with crosses coming from cones 'b' and 'c' to vary angle of cross.

Repeat from other side.

Crosses - small sided game (20 mins)

Finish off with a Small Sided game which promotes Crossing

Equipment

3x3 +2 wide players for crosses. 

Cross from wide options (unopposed). Firstly teams crossing from deep.

Shoot or cross options.

Progressions

Swap wide players so crosses coming from a different angle

Have one defender to move into attacking zone if ball goes out wide.
