Technical (15 mins)

Set Up

  • 2 groups of 7 working at same time.
  • 2 permanent wide players, GK and rotating midfielders/attackers (2).

Drill

  • 2 central players bounce passes until play is triggered.
  • Play triggered by both wide players checking off cones to receive.
  • Central player closest to wide players plays the ball.
  • Receiving wide player, points shoulders and hips forward in attacking position with receiving leg out ready to dribble.
  • Wide player with ball dribbles and puts cross in beyond mannequin, this may be a first time cross depending on the quality of pass.
  • Attacking players time their run to get shot away.
  • Next 4 waiting players continue to bounce passes till play is triggered once more. Play starts at opposite wide player.
  • Previous group rests for 1 minute.

Considerations

Cross

  • Speed of attack (Time limited to expose defence)
  • Head/eyes up to judge type of ball to play
  • Limit touches, but be in control
  • Range of crosses/ passes (Driven, floated, curled, cut back etc)
  • Weight of ball and defensive line.

Finish

  • Timing of run (Arrive late and fast)
  • Stay onside
  • Shape of the run (Front post, back post or measured to receive from deep).
  • Communication with other attacking players
  • Awareness of defensive line
  • Type of finish (Header, volley, controlled, power, finesse etc) determined by the situation (Type of cross, attacker and GK position)

Tactical (15 mins)

Set Up

  • 8v8 set up with fixed wing players in attacking halves only, leaving 6v6 in other areas excluding GKs.
  • Wide players are unopposed when in the channel.

Drill

  • CBs stay wide to receive, once on ball look to find wide players as soon as possible to impact game.
  • Wide players cross to striker and support players. Movement and finish depends on cross and defensive players positions.

Progression

  • Defensive wing player allowed into opposition crossing area to put pressure on cross once the wide player has received the ball, making it harder and more realistic for wing player.
