 Positioning, Spacing, and Off-Ball Movement

1. Positioning – Showing for the Ball / Facing the Field

  • Objective: Help players become available and aware.
  • Key Concepts:
    • Show for the ball: Move into passing lanes to support teammates.
    • Face the field: Position your body to see as much of the play as possible, enabling quicker decisions and better ball distribution.
  • Why it matters: Good positioning creates passing options and keeps the game flowing.

2. Spacing – Opening Up / Getting Wide / Stretching the Defense

  • Objective: Create space to play and exploit gaps.
  • Key Concepts:
    • Open up: Move away from pressure to receive the ball.
    • Get wide: Use the full width of the court to spread defenders.
    • Stretch: Force the defense to cover more ground, opening central lanes.
  • Why it matters: Proper spacing makes it harder for opponents to defend and easier to find attacking opportunities.

3. Off-Ball Movement – Rotation / Change of Speed /Check Runs

  • Objective: Keep defenders guessing and create dynamic play.
  • Key Concepts:
    • Rotation: Swap positions with teammates to confuse defenders and get them off balance.
    • Change speed: Accelerate or decelerate to lose markers.
    • Check runs: Move away and then back toward the ball to create separation.
  • Why it matters: Intelligent movement off the ball opens passing lanes and creates scoring chances.
