Block 1 (4 minutes) – GK Creating Overload vs. High Press

Opposition Problem:

The opposition presses aggressively in a 1-3-2 shape, aiming to prevent short build-up play and forcing mistakes under pressure.

Solution:

The GK must step in with play and be brave  to create a 3v2 overload with the center-backs.

Quick ball circulation to move the pressing team and open passing lanes.

Practice Conditions:

GK must be involved in the build-up.

If the pressing team wins possession, they must finish within 5 seconds.

Coaching Points:

1. Finding the Spare Man:

Scan before receiving to identify the free player.

Recognize where the opposition leaves space.

2. Support Positions:

GK must adjust positioning to create angles and always offer an option.

Be brave in possession, stepping into space if needed.

3. Ball Speed:

Play quickly to shift the press before opposition can adjust.

Use disguised passes to keep defenders guessing.

4. Creating 2v1s:

If pressed, GK combines with CBs to eliminate an opponent.

Recognize moments to draw a presser before playing out.

What Ifs:

1. If the opposition blocks central passing lanes?

GK uses wide areas to create 2v1s with CB’s

2. If the opposition presses the GK aggressively?

GK plays first-time passes or clips the ball into midfield.

3. If the opposition delays the press?

GK steps forward with the ball to attract pressure and create space.

Block 2 (4 minutes) – GK Creating Overload vs. Mid-Block

Opposition Problem: The opposition sits deeper in a 3-3 shape, blocking central progression.

Solution

Gk encouraged to circulate ball to move opposition out of position and look for a spare man.

Coaching Points:

  • Finding the Spare Man:

    • Recognizes when to play short vs. when to draw pressure and switch.
    • Uses the extra pass to shift the opposition before progressing.
  • Support Positions:

    • GK steps into a higher position to maintain possession.
    • Ensures a constant passing option for defenders under pressure.
  • Ball Speed:

    • Tempo changes to unbalance the defensive block.
    • GK uses driven or clipped passes to break lines efficiently.

Opposition What Ifs:

  • If the opposition screens passing lanes?

    • GK recycles possession quickly, forcing them to adjust.
  • If the opposition allows the GK time but presses the defenders?

    • GK steps higher to create a +1 overload, forcing them to commit
