Dribble Turn Pass (20 mins)

Purpose:

To develop ball control, turning technique, passing accuracy, and decision-making under pressure.

Drill Setup:

  • Players in groups of 3–4.
  • One cone placed 10–15 yards from the starting point.
  • A small area at the far end with cones or bibs (for Variation 3).

Variations:

Variation 1: Dribble & Turn

  • Player dribbles to the cone.
  • Performs a turn (inside or outside cut).
  • Dribbles back to the next teammate.

Variation 2: Dribble, Turn & Pass

  • Player dribbles to the cone.
  • Turns and passes the ball back to the next teammate.

Variation 3: Dribble, Turn & Retrieve

  • Player dribbles to the cone.
  • Turns and collects a cone or bib from the far area.
  • Returns it to their team base.

Coaching Points:

Dribbling

  • Toe pointed down.
  • Use the front/laces of the foot.
  • Keep ball close when approaching the turn.

Turning

  • Use inside or outside of foot for cuts.
  • Encourage quick, sharp turns.
  • Head up before and after the turn.

Passing (Variation 2)

  • Use inside of foot for accuracy.
  • Weight and timing of pass.
  • Communication with teammate.

Decision-Making (Variation 3)

  • Awareness of space and objects.
  • Quick transitions between actions.

4 v 1 (20 mins)

Purpose:

To develop composure under pressure, passing technique, spatial awareness, and pressing discipline.

Drill Setup:

  • Create a circle or grid area.
  • One team (e.g. Blue) starts inside the area as defenders.
  • The other team (e.g. Red) starts outside or around the edge in possession.

Drill Rules:

  • Only one defender (Blue) can press at a time.
  • Possession team (Red) aims to keep the ball and complete passes.
  • After 5 successful passes, a second defender joins the press.
  • Each additional 5 passes allows one more defender to enter.
  • If defenders win the ball, teams swap roles immediately.

Coaching Points

Attacking (Possession Team)

  • Spacing: Players should spread out to create passing lanes.
  • Receiving Angles: Always be in a position to receive the ball.
  • Passing Technique:
    • Use correct surface (inside of foot for control).
    • Ensure good weight and accuracy.
    • Head up before passing.

Defending (Pressing Team)

  • Work Rate: Pressing player must close down quickly.
  • Angle of Approach: Cut off passing options while pressing.
  • Communication: Coordinate with teammates when additional pressers join.

2 v 1 (20 mins)

Purpose:

To develop decision-making in overload situations, movement off the ball, and defensive positioning under pressure.

Drill Setup:

  • Create a small grid or channel.
  • Two attackers vs. one defender.
  • Ball starts with one attacker.

Drill Rules:

  • Attackers aim to draw the defender in and release their teammate into space.
  • Defender applies pressure from the front, trying to intercept or delay.
  • Attackers can support ahead or behind the ball.
  • Rotate defenders

Coaching Points

Attackers

  • Draw the Defender: Use body shape and movement to attract pressure.
  • Release the Ball: Pass at the right moment to exploit space.
  • Movement Off the Ball:
    • Support ahead or behind the play.
    • Adjust angle to receive.
  • Communication: Talk early and clearly to support decision-making.

Defender

  • Angle of Approach: Close down the ball while cutting off the passing lane to goal.
  • Don’t Overcommit: Stay balanced and ready to shift.
  • Quick Adjustments: React quickly if the ball is moved to protect the goal.
