Skill (Opposed) - 9 vs 5, 5 vs 2 (20 mins)

Set Up:

  • Grid dependant on space, ability of players and numbers (can do more plyers if team dictates that)
  • Players play 5 vs 2 in the middle box, when the 2 wins the ball, play opens to the big box and is now 9 vs  5.
  • If the 5 win the ball, they can score on the mini goals.
  • The 9 earn points by completing a certain amount of passes.
  • Once they complete the pre-determined number of passes they can now score on the mini goals as well (Optional)

Key Points:

  • Working on transition team play and possession.
  • Encourage defenders to "hunt" for the ball with intensity
  • Once black wins the ball how big can they make the pitch?
  • Receiving and passing on the proper foot
  • Scan + shoulder check

Technical (Unopposed) - Eliminating the Opponent with a Wall Pass (20 mins)

Organization:

  • 5 Players minimum with the area being as large or small based on the age/ability of the players involved.

Starting Point:

  • Player A, plays OUT to Player B, who plays BACK to Player A.
  • Player A then plays a THROUGH pass to C, accelerates past Player D, to receive a wall pass and plays a 1-2 pass back to Player C and takes his/her position.
  • Player C then repeats the passing sequence the opposite direction by passing OUT to Player D, who passes BACK to Player C, who then plays THROUGH to the next Player in the line.

Action:

  • Once the players have learned the sequence and over come the learning curve, the goal is to play as many passes on their first touch.
  • Player B and D won't move in the sequence so don't forget about them. Change them up once in a while. I found using my strikers and center mids there to work on their ability to play wall passes through the middle of the pitch was quite effective but obvioussly anyone can go there and should go there.

Coaching Points:

  • Proper foot to pass with (pretend the defender is the cone)
  • Wall pass players check away and to, check shoulder, fix shape, receive half turn and lay a nice set pass
  • Once the player starts the sequence, they should take a step to the side to suck the defender in the direction to the get around the corner for the return pass
  • The long pass needs to be with the right foot since we're passing that way and to the right of the cone for the receiving player to avoid the defender (the cone)
  • The receiving player for the long pass should check away and to etc. as always and use their left foot to play the ball in for the overlapping run
  • The pass back from the overlapper needs to be to the near foot to help protect the ball from the defender.
  • Lots of details in this quick moving drill. Great to get the kids moving and have their details challenged.

SSG - Breaking Into the Attacking Third (20 mins)

Set-Up:

  • 2 pugg nets
  • 2 cones
  • Soccer balls (at half, or on the side with the coach)
  • 5 pinnies + 1 pinnie for a neutral
  • One team will be attacking, the other is defending
  • 4v4 + 1 in the grid, 1v1 + keeper in the attacking third
Description:
  • 4v4 + 1 possession in the midfield third
  • Attacking team is attempting to break lines by doing 1 of the following
    • An attacking player can play a ball into the striker to join in the attacking third to create a 2v1
    • An attacking player can dribble into the attacking third to create a 2v1
    • An attacking player can play a ball into the attacking third for another player to create a 2v1
    • If the neutral player does any of the above another attacking player and defender can join to create a 3v2
  • When the defending team regains possession they attack the pugg nets
  • If the ball leaves the field of play, a new ball is played in by the coach
  • Play for a set amount of time and then change who attacks vs who defends, keep score!
Coaching Points:Quick passing and movement to release players in the attacking half to create 2v1 overloads to score
  • Passing angles, scanning, stretching, receiving/passing on the proper foot, 1 if you can, 2 if you must!, weight of pass, etc.
  • Take shooting/finishing opportunities early
    • Players should take a good first touch to receive and drive forwards to goal. Positive passing, dribbling and running with the ball should be encouraged so that chances can be taken quickly
  • Movement to create space for self or teammate
    • In 2v1 situations, players off the ball need to take up positions and use movements to unbalance the defender. These movements either create space to receive or create space for their team mate in possession to shoot at goal.
  • Different ways to break into attacking third
    • Players should understand different ways to break forwards including dribble in, pass into striker and follow, or pass into striker as a third man runner advances forwards.

Final Game - 5v5 or 6v6 (10 mins)

Encourage players to focus on the theme of the session and to finish their opportunities.

2. Players receive 2 points for any finish in the "second 6-yard box".

3. Players receive 3 points for a first time finish in the "second 6-yard box."
